Online social networking seems more important these days than it ever did before. It seems as thought whatever some people write in a blog post or an online article gets tweeted and ‘liked’ on Facebook and Google+ thousands of times. And you need to make sure the same thing happens to what you write online. But how do you do it? It’s easy to join a social networking site like Twitter or Facebook or Google+ and continually post about something you’ve written and uploaded to the internet. But as a writer, it’s even more important to get others to network about your writing. Why? Because people will pay more attention to something that’s recommended by others rather than them posting about what they’ve written themselves. Let’s face it, if someone posts on a social network about their latest blog post or article they’ve written, how much notice are you going to take of it? Unless it has a really intriguing heading or it’s something that you’re absolutely go-nuts crazy about, you may or may not click through to read it. On the other hand, if someone else posts about something amazing they’ve read online and recommend that others read it too, then it’s more likely to get read. But the question remains of how do you go about making sure that other people want to “tweet,” “like” and generally go round the internet recommending something you’ve written? The answer is that you should be doing what you’re supposed be doing if you own a website. And that is, providing content that is so remarkable, inspiring or controversial that people just can’t help sharing it. So how do you go about creating such content? Whenever you write an article or a blog post, ask yourself 3 questions before you start. So what? Who Cares? What’s in it for me? These are the 3 questions your readers will be asking themselves subconsciously. Every time you make a statement readers want to know, so what? So whenever you say something, make sure you validate it with a reason. Also keep in mind who you’re writing to. Why will the reader care about what you’re saying. You could even write the reason they should care. For instance, if you’re writing about environmental pollution, state clearly why they should care about it - because it kills plants, animals, causes cancer, etc. Readers also want a reason to keep on reading. They want to know what’s in it for them so let them know with things like “this can really help you to…,” “you won’t believe what you’ll be able to accomplish…”. These types of statements help readers to answer their own questions. Questions they probably weren’t even aware they were asking. If you can answer these questions in your writing then you’ll have a better chance of being ‘tweeted’ about. And also don’t forget controversy. If what you say online is seen as controversial, that can get you a lot of attention too. But by controversial, I don’t mean wrong or mean, I just mean things that go against the norm. People also like to visit websites and blogs of writers who write about things that no one else is. Or they have a writing style that goes against the normal conventions. And above all else, when you’re writing online, come across as an authority. No one wants to listen to a nobody who knows nothing about anything. Instead people want to read articles written by people who sound as though they know what they’re taking about. So when you write your next article for your website or your next post for your blog, don’t be shy and boring. Write what you think, not what you think everyone else wants to hear. Be bold. It doesn’t matter if others disagree with what you say. Remember controversy helps you to get noticed. Just make sure you’re being noticed for all the right reasons. So when you write for the internet, don’t fit in.
