Top entrepreneurs to successful and famous entrepreneurs to great entrepreneurs all had one strategy in common. The one strategy that took them from being a rogue entrepreneur, learning the hard way, to being successful entrepreneurs was having someone show them how to do it. They learnt what they needed from someone with experience, someone who showed them what needed to be done. They were mentored entrepreneurs. Yes I am coming into this from the angle of entrepreneurs, but the concept of what I am talking about is universal and transcends to all aspects of life. From students at school, to Politicians, to Actors, to Sport stars and athletes they all have mentors in their life. Maybe the name for these people is disguised as coaches, teachers and advisors but ultimately they are mentors that guide and advise people to being the best version of themselves. Ask yourself where would Luke Skywalker be without Yoda? Or even the Karate Kid without Mr Miyagi, or Rocky without his trainer Mick, or Neo without Morpheus in the Matrix? They all had that one instrumental person that helped them become the best version of themselves. They all already had 99% of what was needed (just like what you have) to be great. All the mentor did was provide the final 1% to help unlock their true potential and be the 100% version. The name mentor may have a stigma attached to it the world of Internet marketing and new entrepreneurs but entrepreneurs that you know and admire wouldn’t be where they are today without their mentors. These are the Richard Branson’s, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg’s of the world. This is ultimately why I had a strong urge to write about benefits of having a mentor. I could write a book about the importance but for the purpose of this article and not making you grow old I have simply taken 3 main points to share with you today my friend. Get’s you to your goal quicker Like I mentioned earlier you can be a rogue entrepreneur and go it alone learning the hard way. On this path you end up spending more money and time, and shouting out words in frustration, that would make a sailor blush. Have you ever tried to do a 1000 piece jig saw puzzle without looking at the picture on the box? Well being a rogue entrepreneur is doing just that. As you can imagine that jig saw puzzle probably never gets completed using this method. As someone new to internet marketing, or being a new entrepreneur you will get a sense of overwhelm, frustration, anger and confusion by not knowing where to start. Then you will go through analysis paralysis where you will spend that much time analysing what to do first you end up not actually doing anything at all because you are paralysed by all the analysis going on in your head. A good mentor will focus you onto what to do, how to do it and why you have to do it, and thus spare you from thinking you have to reinventing the wheel. Using Rocky as an example, we saw how far he got trying to train himself and how his efforts and motivation were basically in the toilet, and we know what happened when his trainer took over, when he got the guidance and mentorship from his trainer Mick. The difference was winning and losing, and we all know he won. His trainer didn’t do the work for him, he told Rocky what he needed to do to become the world champion. Rocky put in the blood, sweat and tears to becoming successful, his mentor simply told him how to do it. Same thing here my budding entrepreneur. There is no doubt there will be a lot of trial and error when it comes to business but having a mentor will get you to your goal quicker. Guidance A great quote I can across from Martin Luther King Jr was; “Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase”. It reminds me of the first Karate Kid movie (and not the awful copied remake, the original) where Mr Miyagi had ‘Daniel son’ doing all the chores, painting the fence, cleaning his cars etc. Daniel wanted to learn Karate and didn’t understand why he was being asked to wax on wax off whilst cleaning Mr Miyagi’s fleet of cars. Angry and frustrated he was ready for quitting before Mr Miyagi showed him everything he had learnt in a quick demonstration. It was a brilliant example of a paradigm shift where you think one thing, but then your mind is opened up to a new way of thinking. Mr Miyagi knew exactly what he was doing in guiding ‘Daniel son’ towards learning Karate. Having someone to guide you is essential to maintaining forward momentum in your business. A good mentor will always be there to guide you in the right direction, even if you can’t see what they are doing for you. Leverage Leverage has been around since the beginning of time, from the building of the 7 wonders of the world. Things like the ancient pyramids to the hanging gardens of Babylon were all built with the use of leveraging tools to move the huge building materials they needed. If you think they had super human strength where they could move the materials with their bare hands think again. They had leverage!! No different to what we have now, it’s just in a different format, (not sure I can go as far as saying a more advanced format because it still baffles me how some of these magnificent feats of architecture where put together back then). The leverage I am referring to of our age the internet and technology. Staying with my film theme Luke Skywalker leveraged the ‘force’ in order to harness his Jedi skills. By hiring a mentor, you can leverage their knowledge and experience which will help to keep you on track and focus on the things that matter. The added bonus to being a mentored entrepreneur is that you are instantly plugged into their network. If you have chosen your mentor wisely, you have the opportunity to leverage not only your mentor’s knowledge, but THEIR mentor and circle of influence too. Essentially, having a well chosen mentor will help you to focus your attention on the things that matter, get you reaching your goals quicker, get the right guidance and leverage you need by being a mentored entrepreneur, instead of a rogue entrepreneur. This allows you to waste far less time, energy and will power on things that are unimportant. Having the motivation and a laser focused outlook on what you want to achieve is essential to any success, and is something that a good mentor will keep reminding you of. Shiraz Mirza used to be rogue entrepreneur simply because he didn't know any better. But being the huge movie fan that he is he has understood the reality of the concept he has been watching for years. Having seen the light, he has now moved from being a rogue entrepreneur to a mentored entrepreneur. To wrap this article up I will finish how I started, Top entrepreneurs to successful and famous entrepreneurs to great entrepreneurs all had one strategy in common. The one strategy that took them from being a rogue entrepreneur, learning the hard way, to being successful entrepreneurs was having someone show them how to do it. They learnt something from someone with experience, someone who showed them what needed to be done. They were mentored entrepreneurs.
