What is Toenail fungus? Toes are often exposed to dark and wet atmospheres. This leads to the formation of fungus and changes the color of the nail to brownish or yellow. Basically there are three types of infections: - Distal subungual onychomycosis (DSO): The infection is formed in the distal nail bed and then progress to proximal nail bed.
- Proximal subungual onychomycosis (PSO): Infection is found in the proximal nail bed which is rarely found in the people who are immune systems.
- White superficial onychomycosis (WSO): the outer surface of the nail gets white discoloration which may be scraped away.
These infections can be caused by: - Dermotophyte fungi(tinea unguium)
- Yeasts like candida albicans
- Non-dermatophyte molds.
How will laser toenail fungus treatment helps? During Laser toenail fungus removal a light source is directly focused on the desired toe. This laser targets the particular fungi infection which may be either in the toenail or in the toe nail matrix. This destroys the infection without any pain since the toenails cells are dead cells. In some cases the living fungi is also targeted by focusing specific wavelength. The wavelength can be three types which depend on the infection: 1064nm, 660nm and 940nm. The laser toenail fungus removal procedure will be performed for about 20 to 30 minutes and consists of three different sessions. Generally anesthesia is not required because the operation of this laser beams destroys the fungus directly with separate wavelengths. The cost ranges from $1,000 to $2,500 depending on the type of infection and condition of fungus. This laser treatment is painless and has no restrictions like health, age, etc. There is no existence of adverse reactions and side effects. Normal use of shoes and nail enamels can be continued after the treatment.
