The Indian Civil Services exam is conducted by the UPSC or Union Public Service Commission for recruitment in various Group A and Group B positions in the departments and ministries of the central government. The State level Civil Services exams are considered as another opening for government services in India but these exams are conducted by the Public service Commission of the respective states. Just like the Indian Civil Services exam the state civil service exams are also conducted every year for different state level positions that include Grade 1 position in State Civil Services and State Police Services along with block development officer, assistant collectors and a number of other posts. Being the largest state in the country Uttar Pradesh requires the maximum number of civil servants and the UPPSC or Uttar Pradesh Public service Commission is responsible for recruiting able candidates in various positions under the Uttar Pradesh Government. The eligibility criteria for both the Indian Civil Services and State Civil Services are the same and the candidates are required to have a minimum 3yrs. bachelor degree from any of the recognized universities of the country. Moreover both the UPSC or any other State Public Service Commission like the UPPSC abide by the same rules and regulations related to age restrictions and seat reservation for SC, ST and OBC candidates and the exam pattern is also more or less the same. Another important point about the State Civil Service Exam is that candidates from one state is eligible to appear in the Civil services exam conducted by some other state but during the interview process the candidate is desired to possess detailed knowledge and understanding about the language and culture of the state under consideration. The exam scheme of the state civil service exam is more or less same as the UPSC pattern of an aptitude test followed by a main exam and interview round.
Since the exam pattern as well as the syllabus of the State Civil Service exam and the UPSC Civil Services exam are more or less the same candidates will do better if they sit for both the exams at the same time. All the different state public service commission like the UPPSC tries to ensure that the dates do not collide.
