How To Season A Carbon Steel Wok

There are many options that you have when choosing woks; one of those options and perhaps the best one is the carbon steel wok. These are the woks that you take care of and they pay you back by lasting forever. You should look for a carbon steel wok, but before you use it to make the best wok recipes you will need to season it. It is not a difficult process and it should take you less than an hour to complete. Here are the steps so that you will be able to take care of your wok from the start.

Seasoning Your Wok

After you choose a wok the first thing that you want to do is to wash them with hot water and a little liquid detergent. Always use a sponge so that you never scratch the surface. You can do the same to the exterior of the wok, then rinse and dry. You will then need to place the wok on high heat. Turn the wok so that you cover a larger area. You will notice that the metal color will change to an almost greenish color. Remove the wok from the heat and get some oil in it. You can add the oil with a paper towel so you cover the entire surface.

Heat the wok on medium heat for about ten minutes and then remove from heat. You can use a paper towel to wipe the oil once it starts to cool down. You will notice some residue on the paper towel, and that is a normal thing to see so you should not worry much about it. You should repeat this process a few more times so that your job after you buy woks is complete. Repeating the process at least three times should be enough for it.

Other Things To Look For

Doing the previous process after you choose a wok you will get you to season carbon steel woks but there are a few more things that you have to do. Look for the protective coating from the manufacturer and make sure that it is clean. You should also go with non-stick woks; they may be a little highly priced, but at least your food will be easier to make and will have a lot more flavor in their food. Finally keep in mind that flat bottomed works will work a lot better than other styles.
