Agent Vinod Hindi Movie Review

Entertainment,Music,Recreation & Leisure
Thanks to the hype and hard to miss promotional tactics (read Saifeena selling everything from burgers and chips to cricket) expectations and anxiety are obvious.

Agent Vinod opens with a catchy credit track, that’s an impressive amalgamation of a retro era and modern cinema. Fingers crossed and we’re happy so far! So, will Saif Ali Khan’s Agent Vinod be India’s answer to Hollywood spy thrillers with Agent Vinod being our desi Bond? The answer could have been ‘Yes’ if only the likes of slick action, globetrotting, stunning VFX, swanky cars, nuclear weapons, suave hero, sensuous heroine and stone-eyed-villains could have sufficed for a uncomplicated and thrilling plot. It might be as glossy and stylish as a Hollywood flick, but lacks depth and trickery expected of a spy thriller. In short it’s Bond + Bourne + Tin Tin + “Bollywood” – Quite a khichdi!

How we wish Agent Vinod was just a comic and not a movie. When director Sriram Raghavan is at the helm of the events, you expect a clever Johnny Gaddar and not a common Agent Vinod. It's seems Raghavan couldn't balance well while dishing out a mass entertainer without doesn't lack sensibility.

Agent Vinod is a Raw Agent. He is on a mission to trace the killer of his colleague Rajan (Ravi Kisen) through a series of events that take place across the world. He is equipped to do just anything, come out of any situation unscathed and travel across countries at a jet speed. Thus the film takes you across Afghanistan, Morocco, Russia, India, Latvia causing a lot of bewilderment. Soon he discovers that a terrorist gang is planning to kill millions with a deadly weapon referred to as “242,” which is a nuclear bomb.It is triggered using a detonator that rests inside a poetry book ‘Rubaniyat’.

If Kareena proved to e a femme-fatal ?

In the fight to diffuse the bomb, Agent Vinod meets Irum Bilal (Kareena Kapoor) an agent from Pakistan. Now, both of them are on a common mission and both of them go through the same ordeal - fighting goons (Shazan Khan), arm suppliers (maxi clad Moroccan Prem Chopra), terrorist, drug and prostitute dealers (ugly Bud Spencer, played by Ram Kapoor). All through this Tom & Jerry chase our hero and heroine try really hard to put chemistry on display but thanks to their expressionless (are spies not allowed to emote?) faces, the fire is just so invisible. But all this happens as such a sluggish pace that you really doubt if it’s a spy movie!

After watching Agent Vinod, we are sure Saif will carry off a Judwa 2 - his poker faced comedy that’s a mix of wit and sarcasm leads to bouts of laughter. He seems to be the best choice to play the suave spy with his charm, chutzpah and perfect body. Though the fact that even after being slapped and sloshed in a brawl his shirt remains perfectly tucked, is something that raises eyebrows! Chalo, we’ll give that to the self-obsession of the producer actor.

But what went wrong with Kareena? She had all the scope to play the ‘feme-fatale’! But she fails to impress in both- her mujra as well as her ISI agent avatar. Her mujra mate Maryam Zakaria is not just a better dancer but well toned too! Kareena plays this too good to kill anyone girl, which looks unreal when you are an agent on a mission to save your country. Together, they make the complete spy setting phony. However, the supporting cast is solid. Aadil Hussain (Vidya Balan’s husband in Ishqiya) as a villain is good and so is Ram Kapoor, who looks really ugly with that wig, while corny Prem Chopra is a treat to watch!

About the most illogical scenes of Agent Vinod...

The film draws inspiration from films like Mission Impossible, James Bond and also Phantom comics. But, despite the western influence illogical situations push it far from being one. For instance – How Ram Kapoor cannot spot the infiltrator in his security gang comprised of all Russians expect one Indian (Ravi Kissen). Another one is why Agent Vinod trusts Iram despite being ditched twice – some personal connections eh? Also the scene where a shot-by-a-bullet and almost dead Kareena breaks the glass of a building and shouts out to spot the villain. But the scene that bears a Bollywood stamp is when Saif who is transporting the detonator in a chopper outside the city limits talks out his heart with a dying Kareena! Will she die or won’t? We’ll leave it for you to discover!

Raghavan has given a subtle tribute to Bollywood too with mention of Amar Akbar Anthony, Don and of course Agent Vinod of the 70s. Musically, as we said earlier, the film is a treat as far as Danial B. Craig’s background goes. However, Pritam’s music looks out of place. Dialogues shine but pace is a dampener.

Agent Vinod is a good looking action-film, better than many recent ones but for being a thriller that engrosses you and wins you over – Agent Vinod remains raw and sketchy. A film that's good and bad at the same time!
