Belmont Stakes was inaugurated in 1867 and much to the surprise of everyone that day, the race was won by a filly despite a field comprising of stronger male contenders and the gruelling distance. This was Ruthless, the first winner of the first Belmont Stakes, also the first filly to achieve a feat such as this. Bred in New York, on the Morris Farms owned by Francis Morris, Ruthless was foaled out of dam Barbarity and sired by a distinctive stallion imported due to his rich genetic pedigree, Eclipse. Even the dam, Barbarity gave birth to a number of multiple graded races and stakes winners hence consecutively leading to them famously being called, the “Barbarous Battalion”. The most distinct wins Ruthless earned during her racing career were as a three year old. As a two year old in 1866, she won the inaugural race for the Nursery Handicap conducted at a distance of a mile at the Jerome Park racetrack, the same as the next year’s Belmont Stakes. She clocked a 1:49 and was described as merely cantering through the field as if she were working out. Ruthless would soon stamp her dominance over the field of racehorses, irrespective of genders as she started in the inaugural Belmont Stakes race in 1867. Not more than 2 weeks before the Belmont Stakes, Ruthless finished second to Monday at the Jersey Derby run over a distance of 1 ½ miles. She was back in her winning form at the Jerome Park race track on June 19th, and won the Belmont Stakes, better recognized as the “Triple Crown Graveyard” by a head to a male contender, De Courcey. How Ruthless won the Belmont was merely an accident that simultaneously also proved her excellence on the track against male counterparts. The field that say also comprised of Monday, who was also owned by Morris, however, since the strategy to put Ruthless in the race was to hold back De Courcey in a bid to allow Monday to head to the wire, Ruthless demolished the entire field and lead them by a head to win the race. Monday would finish last in that race. After Ruthless winning the Belmont Stakes, only two other fillies successfully won the Belmont Stakes in its history of 143 years. They were, Tanya in 1905, and Rags to Riches in 2007.
