People often confuse two terms "veterinary technician" and "veterinary assistant" while entering the veterinary medicine sphere. It is important to understand the difference between these notions as they are not the same ones. Especially students who are going to enter the educational establishments and are eager to get the specialization of veterinary technician and veterinary assistant should clearly see the difference. The positions differ significantly in job scope, whether attending a veterinary technician college is required, salary and benefits, and job opportunities. The scope of these professions is the first main factor of their difference. Although the main function of both professions is to assist the veterinary the duties and necessary skills for the veterinary technician and veterinary assistant differ in the specific manner. And on the basis of it they perform different kinds of activity. If talking about the veterinary technician the specialist of this profession should graduate a veterinary technician establishment. He is responsible for the field of work that contains the duties of a nurse, anesthetist, lab technician and/or radiology technician, as needed. Students of the veterinary technician establishment will get the knowledge and after graduation will manage to administer shots, set bones and perform many other aspects of the daily care for animals. So this profession is very close to the career of the main veterinary and demands from the specialist a high qualification and good command of knowledge. From the other hand, the veterinary assistants can get the education either in a vet tech college, or in other medical establishment where they get the general set of knowledge and are taught a bit different subjects and duties. As a rule they perform the work that is connected with the routine clinical work. They don`t have such responsibilities as the veterinary technician and play the role as the assistant who help to reach some instrument in the course of the operation or some procedures, or to do some work in the clinic. Their tasks usually contain such duties as cleaning and sterilizing the tables and instruments, scheduling appointments, giving the pieces of advice but not appointing the course of curing, answering phones, taking care of the front desk and of the cabinet in general. They may also assist in the procedures that won`t influence the life of the animals such as feeding, exercising, and cleaning of overnight patients. On the basis of the above mentioned we can judge about the level of knowledge and the degree of preparation and qualification needed for these two professions. There are special programs and courses that differ from one-year to three-year duration studying in the veterinary establishment, usually the veterinary college. The qualification of the veterinary technician should be presented in the form of the license got at the end of the study after passing the state exam. In the contrary if speaking about the veterinary assistant student can get the education either in veterinary college, or in some other medical establishment, even in medical school. As a rule, the main package of knowledge the veterinary assistant gets at his job place while beginning to practice. To become an assistant is much easier as this specialist doesn`t perform the activities and medical care of the high level. That means that no risk to the health of the animal. That`s why sometimes the veterinary hire the specialists without experience and teach them at the direct working place. Of course, taking into the consideration these aspects of the work and education need the salary of these kinds of veterinary profession differ as well. The technical veterinary get more money than the assistants as they need more qualified education degree and bear more responsibilities. The annual salary of a veterinary technician differs from $26,000 to $40,000 while that of a veterinary assistant is generally in the range of $14,000 to $25,000. As the qualification degree and skills of these two professions differ, so the chances to get a good paid job are various. Veterinary technicians can get the job in more various establishments than the assistant. They can be hired as the specialists in veterinary hospitals and clinics, in zoos, animal shelters, biomedical facilities and research laboratories. Veterinary technicians can find the job also in wildlife medicine, livestock management and with human societies. At the same time the veterinary assistant's perspectives of getting the job are often more limited. The majority can be hired in clinics, pet hospitals, private practices, pet stores and shelters. Both professions are popular and demand special skills and educational degree. But the one should keep in mind that the qualification degree will surely influence the chance to be hired and the level of the salary one can get. veterinary schools
