Controlling Rodents by Cleaning Leftover Droppings and Odors

Home Improvement,Health,Environment
Rodents like rats and mice are some of the most common, and most unwelcome, home invaders. These furry little pests can carry many different diseases, creating an unsafe and unsanitary home environment, while their chewing and burrowing can cause major damage to your property. Many people call an exterminator at the first sign of a rodent infestation, but there are many ways to tackle the problem yourself as well. Here are a few tips for getting rid of these pesky trespassers.

Prevention

Rodents are attracted to sources of food, water and shelter within your home, so do your best to remove these. Cover your trash cans, and remove any exposed food and water in your kitchen or around your house. In addition, store food in metal bins or plastic Tupperware with tightly closed lids so that the animals cannot get through.

Look around your home for any holes around pipes, doors, windows or near the ground as these could be how the rodents are finding their way into your home. This is one of the most important parts of pest removal, as you cannot permanently keep rodents out of your home unless you close off their entrances. Rodents can chew through most materials, so use something tough like steel mesh combined with polyurethane foam sealant. The steel is tough on their teeth, while the foam sealant will prevent air from passing through, this encouraging the rodents to steer clear.

Setting Traps

Once you've sealed off any new rodents from entering, it's time to trap the ones already inside. Placing the traps is the most important part of successfully catching them. Set the traps in areas you know the rodents frequent. You will be able to discern this by trails of droppings or chewed areas. Be sure to bait the traps with something with a strong smell, like cheese or peanut butter, to entice the rodents. Check the traps regularly and remove dead and trapped rodents. Re-set the traps afterward, and relocate those that haven't caught any pests. Once you remove trapped rats, clean the traps before reusing them. Continue this process until you notice signs that the infestation is over: the droppings will disappear and you will no longer hear the rodents scampering about.

Final Steps

Once the rodents are gone, it is a good idea to conduct a thorough cleaning throughout the infested area. This will clear out any leftover droppings and odors, and will eliminate any germs or diseases left behind. Replace old, dirty insulation with new, sturdy material, and be sure to keep an eye out every now and then to ensure the problem is under control.

Rodents can make cute pets, but an infestation of unwanted rodents can be unpleasant and dangerous. If you have unwelcome rodents in your home, be sure to take action immediately. By following these tips, you will be on your way to a clean, safe, rodent-free environment.
