Storm water runoff has been a problem for mankind living in urban settings since time first began. During a heavy downpour, rainwater can flood the streets and gutters of a city, collecting pollutants, grit and particulates from the surrounding area on its journey toward the storm drains. In severe cases, it all proceeds to flood the sewer treatment plants and contaminate streams, lakes and oceans with polluted overflow. Porous surfaces are very susceptible to clogging and often attract dense clusters of dirt, sand and debris which prevents rainwater from passing through to the lower layers. Residential areas tend to suffer particularly hard from floods and clogged pavement due to the high density of household waste and frequent littering in these areas.
