Thomas Levet, the Frenchman with an impressive playoff record, confirmed his ability as a shoot-out specialist with a dramatic victory at Woburn. He was the outsider with tournament sponsors – the bookies Victor Chandler – in this British Masters showdown but insiders knew better, to snap up lengthy odds on him beating Swedes Matthias Gronberg and Robert Karlssson and Englishman David Howell. Levet a 32-year-old Parisien, who has won six out of seven playoffs, rolled in a testing eight-foot downhill birdie putt at the third extra hole – the par-3 17th – to knock out Gronberg after Karlsson and Howell had failed at the replayed 18th. After comiserating with Gronberg, Levet set off on a circuit of the crowd encircling the green ‘high-fiving’ in a fashion reminiscent of Hale Irwin when he won the US Open in 1990. “It was a lot of fun. It’s what we practice for. After reaching the playoff I thought the worst that could happen would be that I would tie second, so I just went for it,” said Levet who revealed he had found an Irish coin earlier in the week and it had brought him luck. The four players all finished on 14 under par after a nerve-wracking final 18 holes over the new Marquess course, which proved a stiff examination paper. Levet, who collected a £208,000 first prize which took him into the top ten of the Volvo order of merit, had five birdies and two bogeys in his closing 69, while Gronberg had six birdies in his 68. Karlsson looked to be cruising but dropped shots on the closing holes to finish with a 72. Missed putts early on and a seven at the 11th cost overnight leader Howell his chance. At the first playoff hole Howell and Karlsson dropped out with bogeys before Gronberg and Levet parred the replayed 18th and Levet finally rolled in his winning putt at 17. Lee Westwood, favourite for this week’s English Open at the Forest of Arden, finished with a disappointing 74 to finish in a tie for eighth place. Olle Karlsson (-10) with fifth with Niclas Fasth and Ricardo Gonzalez tieing sixth on nine under par. 910 D3 G20 MP600 This article is from http://www.golfflying.com/ Also, We recommend some good top golf clubs to you.
