ATLANTA — Ryder Cup hangovers don’t feel as bad as college hangovers. Or so says Anthony Kim (a guy who would know) after firing a six-under 64 to take the first-round lead at the Tour Championship. Kim, who was paired Thursday with Canadian Mike Weir, made eight birdies in total, his only miscues coming at the first and 12th. Kim said the key to his success was his putter (he needed only 26 putts) thanks to a eureka moment on the practice green moments before teeing off. And it wasn’t rocket science, according to Kim. “It was keep your eye on the ball,” he said. Kim, always good for a quip both on and off the course, did admit to being somewhat fatigued in the aftermath of festivities at Valhalla last Sunday, a celebration he deemed “hard.” What was so hard? “I did a lot of reading that night,” Kim deadpanned. “So my eyes were tired.” Kim will take a four-shot leading into Friday’s play as just five players cracked par at East Lake GC. Weir was under par for much of the day but stumbled late with a three-putt bogey on 17. He finished at even par and is tied for sixth. Weir said it was one of those days when he just couldn’t get any momentum going with the flat stick. “I played well, just burned the edge and three-putting from 15 didn’t help on 17,” Weir said. “But I played well. I just got to go sharpen that up a little bit.” Many players, including Kim and Weir, commented that the course played quite difficult in gusty conditions and on extremely firm greens. Kim said he had 113 yards into one hole but he and his caddie settled on playing an 80-yard shot to allow for forward roll. Hardly a shot checked all day. Weir said he took 10 days off after the BMW Championship due to some soreness in his shoulder and elbow. He played only one practice round coming in. Perhaps as intriguing as Kim’s strong play was the tremendous appreciation from fans for his stellar play at Valhalla. On just about every hole, fans were congratulating and or thanking Kim for helping the U.S. recapture the Ryder Cup. He is perhaps as popular as usual fan favourite Phil Mickelson here, if not more so. If casual golf fans didn’t know of Kim’s prowess before the Ryder Cup, they sure know about it now and should Kim and Mickelson be paired together in ensuring rounds here (Mickelson is tied for second with Ernie Els and Trevor Immelman at two under) it will be interesting to see if a crowd favourite between Kim and Lefty is discernable. Guess Again Gents: An interesting aside from roaming among the galleries Thursday: Two elderly gentlemen, whilst watching Weir on the par-4 12th hole, mused about Weir coming all the way from New Zealand and how he was the second Kiwi after Michael Campbell to win a major. They were corrected by a media member (that’s our job, isn’t it?) and told that Weir was Canadian and was the second left-hander after New Zealand’s Bob Charles to win a major. “I knew it was something like that,” said one of the men.
