Writing for the web is challenging. Not only do you want your content to be found, you also want your content to be read. There's huge competition for attention online. If you're writing content for others, Google's recent Panda update has convinced businesses and Web developers of the value of unique content. This means that your services as a Web writer are in high demand, but it also means that the buyers of your services are more demanding. Let's look at four easy little success secrets which will help you to write content which readers will enjoy, and which will also get the results your buyers want. 1. Consider Your Audience: What Do They Need? Start by considering the audience for your Web page. You have three choices. Will you write to inform, to sell, or to entertain? Great Web content does all three, so think about what your audience needs. Large websites will often provide you with "personas" for whom you write. They've researched their readers and know their advertisers, so they've developed models of their ideal site visitors. Writing to a specific persona makes your task easier, because you'll know the kind of style you should use. if you're writing for a professional audience for example, your style will be very different from the style you would use for a young audience. 2. Break It up: Ensure There's Lots of White Space You know that readers skim content online; they don't read a Web page with the same focused attention they use to read a magazine, book or newspaper page. This means that you need to make your content as inviting as possible with short sentences and paragraphs, and lots of white space. If you're accustomed to writing for magazines, you can still use compound sentences, but be aware that you're doing so. Remember to break up your paragraphs, so that each paragraph contains just two or three sentences. 3. Skimmers Need Headlines In addition to short sentences, and short paragraphs, ensure that you use headlines, sub-headlines, and bullet points where appropriate. Outline your content before you start writing. Know the points you want to make: remember, readers skim. Your mantra should be: short, conversational, and to the point. 4. Page Headlines and Titles: Write for Readers, But Remember the Search Engines You're writing for readers, but you need to keep the search engines in mind. You'll often be given target keywords, but the search engines are smart, and the days of "keyword density" are long gone. Instead, your attention is on the meta elements: the page title, description, and keywords attributes, which are inserted into a page's code, and are only seen by the search engines. Your page title can be different from the page headline. Include your primary keyword in the page title, and the page description.
