Monday Morning Observer: Victoria Day edition Four Canadians are teeing it up today in the Americas qualifying for the British Open. Stephen Ames, Mike Weir, David Hearn and Chris Baryla are attempting to get a spot in the year’s third major, to be played at Royal St. George’s in July. Much of the same crew will try to make it into the U.S. Open on June 6 in Columbus. Weir currently has the second longest streak of majors played at 47, behind only Vijay Singh. By the way, the last time there was a major championship without a Canadian in it was the 1999 Masters. Is there anyone who doesn’t like David Toms? It’s just hard not to feel good about him winning at Colonial, especially after all the injuries and problems he’s had. Remember when he was taken off the course in a stretcher with that heart ailment? Now you wonder what else he has left in him. Another major? Might not be long enough for that but the way he’s putting, anything is possible. One of the remaining high-profile Stack and Tilt players, Charlie Wi, enjoyed a nice week at the Colonial, finishing second to Toms. The teaching method popularized by Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett seems to have fallen out of favour with some, with such golfers as Aaron Baddeley and Mike Weir abandoning it. Those who are still with it include Wi, Eric Axley and Dean Wilson. The Handa Cup is a fun Ryder Cup style event for, ahem, older women professionals, with the America taking on the world. The Americans won, which isn’t surprising, but it was interesting to see a number of Canadian players who’ve fallen off the radar in recent years. Nancy Harvey, the ever-smiling Yorkton, Sask., golfer, and Tina Tombs of Montreal both played in the tournament, which was held in New Hampshire. Others on the World team included Gail Graham and Dawn Coe-Jones. If you’re at the U.S. Open and you see a guy who looks like a B.C. logger walking around with a massive smile on his face, it’s probably this guy. Tiger Woods, the No. 12-ranked golfer in the world. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? Speaking of rankings, did you know that Adam Hadwin (335) is ranked higher than Mike Weir (353)?
