A level sensor is a sensing device that senses or detects the presence of flowing material such as any type of liquid, slurry, free-flowing powders and material that has grain-like consistency. The physical property of a liquid and the action of gravity on the liquid makes the surface of the liquid in a container level. Liquid level sensors sense this level of the liquid and with this measurement the exact quantity of a liquid can be calculated in a given container. The liquid level sensor has many industrial and commercial applications. Two main types of liquid level sensors are commonly used; continuous level sensor that measures level of a substance in a particular range and the point level sensor that only senses whether the level is over or under the point specified. The many types of point level sensor devices are available for detecting the point level of liquids. These use different types of technologies for its manufacture as well as functioning. Some of the types of sensing technology used in liquid level sensors that use point level sensing are: Pulse-wave Ultrasonic technology, magnetic or mechanical-float, pneumatics and conductive-level sensing technology. Ultrasonic technology is used to measure point level sensing in both liquids as well as solids. It can be used for slow flowing viscous fluids and has extensive application in water-treatment plants. Other types of sensors that use the property of capacitance of the sensor material are called Capacitance level sensors that use radio-frequency signals in the circuit. Other types of liquid level sensors use optical technology. This is an ideal technology to use in point-level liquid level sensors as they can be effectively used in water, viscous fluids and corrosive-liquids. Continuous liquid level sensor used to measure continuous levels of liquids are also based on different physical and chemical characteristics of liquids and the materials used for making the sensor. One such liquid level sensor is the magnetostrictive level sensor which use the properties of a magnet that is protectively concealed inside a float. Another similar liquid level sensor is the resistive-chain sensor which also has a magnet that is securely placed inside afloat. Other liquid level sensors that use a variation of the magnet technology are called as magneto-resistive liquid level sensors. For corrosive liquids such as lye or concentrated acids, hydrostatic sensors that can be submerged in the liquid are used. The choice of materials for making these sensors is important as the nature of the corrosive liquid has to be considered. Calibration of hydrostatic liquid level sensors has to be proper and in accordance to the liquid that has to be measured.
