Ra One Hindi Movie Review

Entertainment,Music,Recreation & Leisure
Everyone knows that Ra.One is super hero flick and expecting some slick super hero antics is obviously not wrong. But Shah Rukh Khan negates the obvious and plays a super hero with a H.A.R.T and an emotional one at that, he can shake a booty to chammak challo, woo the leading lady, quote Gita and has a sense of humour too! Imagine all that in a character straight out of your gaming console - and you’ll fall back to the conclusion that it’s a Bollywood flick with SRK written all over it!

Don’t get disappointed, our Super Hero does some action too! Thanks to the special effect department and International technicians, G.One can stop a speeding train with his bare hands, fly over buildings and jumps on cars. Key action sequences including the car chase across London was not only thrilling but well executed too – in short Ra.One gives you some memorable sci-fi moments thanks to the action team, sound engineering team led by Resul Pookutty and Jeff Kleiser the head of VFX team.

But what makes all this fall flat is a weak story line, amateurish acting, out of place songs and dialogues that can make you squirm. Anubhav Sinha’s direction would have been appreciated if we were not exposed to his writing in Ra.One.

Apparantly, director-writer focused all his energies in creating situations worthy enough to herald his super hero and the super villain but conveniently ignored the need of synchronizing all those sub-plots in a coherent story with a well-executed screenplay. (Including mega star Rajinikanth’s appearance) The direct influences coming from a number of Hollywood flicks are not blended well with the Bollywood masala.

Ra.One is the story of a nerdy South Indian Shekhar Subamanium (Shah Rukh Khan), who struggles hopelessly with the forced Tamil accent and eats noodles with curd. Do Tamilians still pronounce Keys as Kiss? C’mon!, his wife Sonia (Kareena Kapoor), who is doing a Phd on Indian abuses (God knows why!) and their gaming freak and indifferent son Prateek (Armaan Verma). To be the ‘Best Dad,’ Shekhar designs a virtual reality game for his company and his son with a super hero G.One and ‘coolest’ super villain Ra.One, who is more powerful than the hero - A modern day take on Frankenstein. Now, the story takes a turn as the real and virtual world unites when Ra.One and G.One step into the real world with Ra.One searching for Prateek and G.One or the Good One struggling to save him.

Movie takes good 45 minutes to get going but interest starts dwindling and you find yourself watching the movie only to know where it will lead you. G.One is introduced in the second half and so far Ra.One (played by Arjun Rampal) doesn’t even have a face as his super power allows him to take any appearance ala Terminator 2. Not only does G.One lack that robotic gait but also irritates you with My Name is Khan’s Rizwan Khan kinda acting. However, (Tom Wu) as one of the Ra.One’s avatars is quite impressive with his icy cool and steel like body language, which is so akin to robots. But as the movie proceeds, you find Ra.One neither menacing nor dangerous, in facts the character is quite shallow.

Flawed and forced comedy and putting logic in the back seat make another set of minuses for Ra.One. From Kareena’s inconceivable abuses like ‘tere baap ka poda’ or both the robots escaping security at the airport to fly to India stun your whims! Vulgar dialogues, crotch grabbing, cleavage shows, nose-picking and condom connotations come as crude and far from witty. Clearly, SRK needs more masala now!

The film moves between London and Mumbai. While London looks mesmerizing in 3D, the train sequence where Mumbai’s Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus is shown crumbling down to pieces as a speeding train collides with it makes a great digital treat.

Performance wise, SRK hams as a Tamilian and amuses as a Super Hero but at the end of the day he is SRK. Kareena looks beautiful and shines in the ‘negative streak’ but that’s the end of her performance. Arjun Rampal does justice as an expressionless character but you expect more from him especially when the film is titled on his character. The kid Armaan Mukherjee is good, but he needs to eae out himself a bit. Musically the movie has only Akon’s Chammak Challo and Vishal Shekhar’s Dil Dara worth taking home.

All in all, Shah Rukh Khan’s most ambitious (read over hyped & aggressively marketed) and Bollywood’s most expensive film ever, Ra.One is meant to be seen for VFX for that’s the only thing new about the flick, which is yet another example of over-hyped film falling flat. Kids and special effect lovers will love this desi attempt which can be a big leap for Bollywood. But, lack of a good plot which was so ingrained in Krishh and Robot mars Ra.One.

Then how has it managed to break all the opening day records? Well, give it to curiosity! So, watch it only if you too are curious to know about SRK’s super-hero-backed-business err… movie, else you know! But don't forget to take your kids along, they'll love it!
