The Irish international has been plagued by a back injury for most of the year and made several attempts to play in events. Each time she had to abort the effort like in the British Ladies Open where she qualified for the matchplay stage. It was particularly disappointing that she had also been selected for the British and Irish Elite Squad. “It is better that I wait until I’m fully fit again. I’m still having treatment and do a lot of swimming so hopefully I will be able to start swinging a club again in a couple of months,” said Elaine after she withdrew from the Leinster team for the AIB Interprovincial Championship at Mount Wolseley Golf Club on August 7,8 and 9. Her place has been taken by Woodbrook’s Sue Philips who earns her first senior cap. Galway’s star teenager Sinead O’Sullivan, who just returned from Germany yesterday after helping Ireland into fourth place in the European Young Masters at Golf Club Augsburg, also had to withdraw from the Connacht team. Sinead is one of the ILGU nominated players for the British Girls Championship from August 6 to 10 in Norwich. She has been replaced by Tara De Courcey from Connemara. The others for the British Championship are Tara and Karen Delaney from Carlow, Amy Duggan from Killarney and Shannon’s Heather Nolan. Ulster, of course, is without their number one player Alison Coffey who is in America with the British and Irish Curtis Cup team. Leinster has dominated the event and seek a ninth consecutive title. Munster interrupted a ten year run with victory in Waterford in 1993. Bridget Gleeson Healy, Eileen Rose Power and Mary Sheehy are survivors from that side while Leinster has no one from the team that started the unbeaten run in 1994. The southern province would once again seem the most likely to dethrone the champions.
