IRELAND’S leading ladies will have it all to play for at Mount Wolseley this week where the Irish selectors will pick the team for the Home Internationals. They will sit in conclave immediately after the AIB Interprovincial Championship which will be defended by Leinster. In fact, they have been champions for the past eight years and will start favourites once again. They are at full strength apart from the absence through injury of international Elaine Dowdall. Also missing from last year’s victory at the Island are Hazel Kavanagh and Yvonne Cassidy, who turned professional after the Home International Championship. Ulster are missing Allison Coffey, who only returns from Curtis Cup duty during this week but the Warrenpoint girl will be available for the Internationals. The selectors did look into the eligibility and availability of Rebecca Coakley who has dominated the domestic scene this season. Australian born of Carlow parents, Coakley was deemed ineligible because of a rule stating that a player could play only for one country. She had previously played for Australia. Leinster were also very interested but the winner of the Irish Close and Open Strokeplay titles has decided to turn professional and leaves this week for the Asian professional tour school. She will also play in the European Tour School and will only become a professional if she qualifies and plays in the final stages of either school. Among the stronger candidates for a place on the Irish team is Martina Gillen. The 20-year-old from Beaverstown has had a busy and impressive season and was only beaten by Coakley for the Irish Strokeplay in Dundalk on a count back. Gillen was two shots ahead with two to play but double-bogeyed the short 17th and wound up with the same score as Coakley who was a single shot better on the count back over the final 36 holes. Other uncapped players with wins behind them this year are Daragh McGowan (Connacht) and Maria Dunne (Leinster) while the selectors might also consider some of the younger players like Irish Girls Champion Karen Delaney, runner-up Heather Nolan, who also won the Hermitage Senior Scratch Cup, or Sinead O’Sullivan from Galway who played so well in the recent European Young Masters in Germany. There is a change in the format for the Interpros this year with the number of players increased by one to eight. The format is three foursomes in the morning and eight singles in the afternoon. Champions Leinster play Munster, the only province to win the title from Leinster in the last ten years while Connacht play Ulster, in the opening session on Wednesday. 910 D3 G20 MP600 This article is from http://www.budgetgolfclub.com/ More budget golf club at http://www.budgetgolfclub.com/ RocketBallz RocketBallz RBZ RBZ
