The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris in France, otherwise known as the Sacré-Cœur Basilica is built on the site of the famous execution of Saint Denis – the patron saint of the city. However the reason for the building of the shrine is as a guilt offering for the people of France and as a communal vote of confidence following the Franco Prussian War and thereafter the Commune in 1871 after which France suffered many misfortunes believed to be due to the grave ill and injustices committed within the city. Although the foundation stone for the building was laid in 1875, consecration was in 1891 and full completion only in 1914. Thereafter the status of Basilica was conferred after World War I in 1919. As a church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus - a popular vision of Christ at the time- which was the epitome of compassion and love, the entire funding for the building of the church came from private sources. Being a church rooted in the hearts of the people, the architecture and sentiments expressed within the Basilica are greatly nationalistic in stature. Paul Abadie was the chief architect who designed the Basilica in a Romanesque – Byzantine style which was not typical of its time. However Abadie did not live to see the completion of the church and five other architects saw to its completion. The three arches in the outer portico supported by the bronze statues of King Saint Louis IX and Joan of Arc – the national saints of France – as well as the church bell weighing 19 tonnes (world’s heaviest bell) all bear nationalistic signs. The landmark Basilica is made out of Chateau Landon stone which constantly emanates celtic which keeps the edifice bleaching itself white no matter the weather conditions. Inside the Basilica is a massive pipe organ and the mosaic in the apse is the largest in the world.
