Accpac, short for Accounting Package, is a business accounting software that’s mainly used in small and medium-sized companies. It was produced by the Sage company after its acquisition in 2004. It is a Windows-based software that streamlines a company’s finance, services, and operation while improving customer relationship management. The application and use of Accpac depends on several factors including the company’s business model, internal resources, and budget. Accpac is a three-layer computer application with business functions separate from the database server. The business functions communicate with the database via a common Application Programming Interface, or API. There are database drivers that will translate this API into calls to the database server being used. Essentially, all the work done by the API is invisible to the Accpac’s business function, which means lesser workload for your system. The database servers that allow the operation of Accpac are Pervasive.SQL, Microsoft SQL, or Oracle. With separate database servers, you can be sure that your data and records are secure. Separate database servers also mean that should your business need change in the future, data migration will be easier. Earlier versions of the Accpac used to have a built-in database system. These earlier versions were only applicable for MS-DOS and Control Program/Monitor systems. Some of the limitations of having a built-in server were: 1) if something failed, the database gets corrupted, 2) program suddenly stop working when many people use it, and 3) it cannot use tools outside of the program necessary for accounting reports. When a version of the Accpac was developed for Windows, the decision was made to use separate databases. This means that any changes needed on the database will be isolated to the database server and not to your system. Whenever a new version of the database driver is released, and your Accpac software needs to be updated to support it, it will just be a matter of providing you with a new database driver. No changes to your application are necessary. Accpac software has a minimum requirement for any supported database. This includes record length, number of fields per table, and number of keys supported. As long as the minimum requirements are met, it is possible to write a database driver that your Accpac can use to access that database.
