Submission Guidelines - The Key To Getting Your Article Published |

Submission guidelines are your blueprint for getting an article or verse published in magazines, trade journals, newsletters and greeting cards. By following the editor's requests, you make their life easier and put yourself way ahead of the competition. Guidelines are to be followed - strictly! If a magazine wants an article on gardening with no more than 1000 words, don't submit a 2500 word article on home renovation. Magazine publication is much more likely if you adhere to the company's wishes. Guidelines may give such information as: Where to submit How to submit Word count If they accept simultaneous submissions Payment terms Copyright information Likewise, if a greeting card company wants 10 verses submitted in type 12 font - that is the format to follow. Never send 100 ideas or verses hoping something will make it through. This is a very ineffective system called Spray and Pray making you appear amateurish. Your ideas will go to the bottom of the heap or worse - in the trash. With the internet, several magazines and greeting card companies now post their guidelines on their website and you can print them from there. If not, write to the editor requesting submission guidelines. Be sure to research prospective companies before submitting your material to see if freelance submissions are accepted. Some magazines and greeting card companies work by assignment only. Search for clues in guidelines. Read the guidelines to find clues on how to break into a magazine. Often they are looking for "filler" material such as puzzles or short tips to fill in between feature articles. This can be a great way to get your foot in the door and your name recognized with the editor. Read the editorial calendar. Many magazines have their editorial calendars posted on their website - take some time to review it. They will give you insight as to the topics they want to cover in upcoming issues. If you have an article that will complement a magazine's theme for a particular month, be sure to send it in prior to deadlines. The editorial calendar can often be found under "Press or Media kits." Treat guidelines as your key to becoming published in your niche. They give you the tools and information needed to reach the editor's desk and your desired customer base. If you follow a company's guidelines to the tee you are more likely to get a quicker response. Unfortunately, when guidelines are not followed, you may never receive a response from the editor and are left hanging in limbo. essay writing service
