A complaint has been filed with the US ITC (International Trade Commission) by Gertrude Neumark Rothschild, who claims she holds a patent that details laser diodes and LEDs that emit short wave-length light. If this is found to be true it could mean that manufacturers are committing patent infringement. Gertrude Neumark Rothschild graduated in 1948, and continued her education gaining an MA and a PhD in Chemistry, she has a long history of research into semi conductors. The laser diodes and LEDs are used in devices such as Blu-ray disc and HD DVD players and mobile phones. Blue-laser diodes are a key component in Blu-ray disc and DVD players, and it is thought that the diodes and LEDs are used in mobile phone backlights, but this has not yet been confirmed. Thirty companies have been named to be investigated by the US ITC to see if they are importing products to the USA that are guilty of patent infringement, including Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG, Toshiba, and Hitatchi. The ITC have agreed to investigate Gertrude’s complaint but have stressed that they are yet to come to a decision regarding the merits of the case.
