Laser hair treatment has been commonplace for the last twenty years and is recognised as the most effective permanent hair removal solution available. In the US the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have recognised laser treatment systems as providing permanent hair "reduction". There are a number of benefits that laser hair removal can offer for women, and men, looking to reduce or eradicate areas of unwanted hair, and laser systems have considerable advantages over more traditional or competing methods. Hair Removal Options The main ways to remove unwanted hair include the traditional shaving, waxing or depilatory approaches. These are time consuming and although each "treatment" may in itself not be costly, the long term cost is considerable. In addition to these traditional techniques modern techniques include electrolysis and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments. Electrolysis is the oldest method of permanent hair removal utilising modern technology. This treatment uses an electrical current to destroy unwanted hair; an electrode is placed in the hair follicle - at the very base of the hair and an electrical current is passed through the hair, resulting in permanent removal. By its nature this is a lengthy and costly process with treatment taking, on average, two years to remove facial hair. IPL Treatments IPL treatment is often confused with and referred to as laser hair removal. There are similarities in that both systems use intense light, which converts to heat and targets the dark pigment in hair. With IPL the bulb of the hair and the shaft is destroyed and in most cases will not grow back. Treatment lengths vary with IPL and while cheaper than many laser treatments per session, it can take many more sessions to permanently remove hair. Laser Suitability Laser hair removal again uses light to target melanin in the hair, but light at a different wavelength to that used in IPL. Melanin is the pigment that gives hair its dark colour - and is also found in skin. Laser technology allows for targeting of specific wavelengths of light that will disable hair growth cells, while leaving surrounding tissue undamaged. Laser hair removal requires a number of treatments, as it is designed to disrupt the growth stage of hair and not all hairs will be in this stage at the same time. Laser treatment is normally only suitable for those with dark hair and mid to light skin colour and is not recommended for those with dark skin. Laser or IPL? There is considerable debate as to the comparative cost and effectiveness of IPL and Laser hair removal. While IPL sessions can be cheaper, laser treatments will normally take less sessions. This means that, overall, laser can be the more cost effective way to permanently remove unwanted hair. Until recently both solutions required treatment at a salon or clinic - with prices varying depending on the individual premises. However, advances in technology mean that laser hair removal treatment systems for home use are now being marketed in both the US and the UK. In the former, the FDA has licensed these systems for home use and the systems use the same technology as that used in clinics. Home at Last The competition between IPL and laser treatments is likely to be increased with the introduction of home laser treatments. These systems come in the form of simple hand held devices that can be easily used by anybody and also have safety features built in to ensure that they are not used on inappropriate skin tones. Costing roughly the same as a single or series of laser treatments on one area of the body at a salon or clinic, the home systems have the edge over other methods and in addition offer the comfort, convenience and privacy that being able to complete the series of treatments in your own home offers. One system developed by Tria Beauty has proven itself highly effective. The Tria laser reviews have been very positive reviews on both sides of the Atlantic, with the majority of women agreeing that not only does the system work but it represents the most cost effective solution to long term permanent hair removal.
