The Principle Behind Compaction

Business,Home Improvement
Soil compaction is an important element in the construction of buildings and infrastructure. It is a method of increasing the density of soil through water loss and compression. It is a long and grueling task that requires a lot of manpower and proper compaction equipment. If compaction is not done properly, it can make the soil brittle, rendering the process completely useless. The best fix for this type of problem is to do the process all over again, which prompts the use of more time and money. That being said, preparing for the project requires planning, and lots of it. This includes knowing the ideal type of soil to work with, the right equipment to use, and other things that must be followed.

Compaction is done to provide fortitude to the soil that is being worked on. Also, non-compacted soil can result into settling. If the soil settles, the building that stands on it will be unstable, leading to tons of problems in the future. If the soil is compacted, settling will be unlikely as there is a minimal chance of sediment formation in the soil. Damage from nature, such as heat and freezing, are also reduced. Lastly, soil swelling, shrinkage and water seepage can be eliminated through this process.

To know which type of compaction equipment that will be used, the scale of the project and the type of work are always considered. Small-scaled projects require smaller machines that generate lower power. Larger-scale projects obviously require heavier equipment. The type of soil, on the other hand, determines the type of equipment that will be used. For example, if the type of soil is cohesive clay, then the best type of equipment that is recommended are the rammers. If the soil is sand and clay, then reversible plates or Rammax rollers can be used. The soil type is determined before the project starts, so the equipment is already prepared prior to working. In the past, the workers follow the recommended configurations set by manufacturers. This has proven to be ineffective because unforeseen events and conditions are not taken into consideration. Today, engineers and project heads determine the equipment and soil type, providing flexibility and control over the project.

Knowing what type of equipment to use is not enough when working on soil compaction. If the person operating the machine is trained properly, problems can be reduced if not eliminated. Or, if the project is larger in size, several issues can arise, especially regarding safety. This does not mean though that smaller projects are safe from accidents. It is important to follow the safety protocols set by the company or the state. Basic protective equipment, such as heavy duty gloves, eyewear, hard hats and work clothes must be worn at all times when working. Lastly, only the people with proper training or experience must operate these machines.

Soil compaction takes a long time to complete. That is why there is little room for error. Choosing the right type of soil, the appropriate compaction equipment, and following the correct procedures will ensure the completion of the project in a safe and timely manner.
