Xi an awarded S & T Outstanding Contribution Awards for the first time at the S & T Xi an award ceremony on July 11, and two CAE members, Zhou Lian and Zhang Jinqiu, won the awards. Each of them receive 500,000 yuan, of which 100,000 yuan is for the award winner personally, and 400,000 yuan is to be used as a subsidy for a scientific research project chosen by the award winner. The S & T Outstanding Contribution Awards are the highest science and technology awards of Xi an City, and they are awarded to honor people who have created tremendous economic and social benefits through S & T innovations, the transfer of scientific and technological achievements into products, and the industrialization of new and high technology, or to individuals who have made important breakthroughs in advanced science and technology, contributed greatly to scientific and technological development and exerted significant influence at home and abroad.
CAE Member Zhou Lian, an award winner, is the president of the Northeast Institute for Non-ferrous Metal Research. He has made outstanding achievements in materials science. He was the first person to use high temperature titanium alloy in advanced China-made aero-engines and the first to use titanium fasteners in China-made airplanes.
CAE Member Zhang Jinqiu, chief designer of the China Northwest Building Design and Research Institute, is the only woman among the first 15 master-rank architecture designers named by China.
