Mohammed Thakurufaanu ruled over the Maldives from 1573 to 1585, a celebrated Maldivian hero who is accredited with saving the nation from the grip of Portuguese invaders. Thakurufaanu, a son of an island chief from Utheemu in the north Thiladhunmathi atoll persuaded his two brothers to join him in waging guerrilla warfare against the Portuguese occupation. He left the Maldives with his two brothers to Maliku in the Lakadive Archipelago where they built and equipped the fast ship Kalhoufummi which was skilfully used for hit and run guerrilla raids to harry and drive away the occupying forces. The strategy was to infiltrate Portuguese occupied islands at night, take the occupiers by surprise and getaway by boat. In 1573 on the night of Rabeeul Awwal, Thakurufaanu and his brothers landed in Male and with the assistance of the populace defeated the Portuguese garrison and freed the country from their influence. It took eight years of intrigue and hardship to defeat the Portuguese. Thakurufaanu became the ruler of the Maldives thereafter and ruled as Sultan al Ghazhee Mohamed Thakurufaanu for 16 years. He founded the Utheemu Dynasty which ruled the country for 121 years. He is said to have been benevolent and just and is remembered with gratitude and pride to this day. Thakurufaanu’s defeat of the Portuguese is commemorated each year on the first day of the third lunar month of Rabeeul Awwal. The tomb of this national hero is located in the centre of Male within the small compound of the Bihuroazu kamanaa Miskiiy, an ancient mosque. A simple small white and green painted structure encloses the 16th century tomb with a white painted wall around it. A low wall demarcates the area enclosing a few other buildings.
