For those of you who don’t already know, feng shui is a sophisticated art with some religious influences, which originated in China thousands of years ago. Despite the religious influences the practice relies more heavily on physics and architecture, using them to bring about prosperity and well being to the homeowners life. The phrase feng shui actually translates into wind and water, in China these are both associated with good luck. The art involves positioning the five elements, wind, water, fire, earth, and metal so that the energies from each balance in a structure. On the most basic level feng shui is essentially an understanding of nature and earth being alive, everything has its own energy and by balancing these energies you can live a balanced and therefore healthy life. Each of these elements have a colour associated with them, and a bearing, each element interacts differently with each other, either positively or negatively. To achieve the basics of feng shui all that is needed is a compass and an octagonal grid containing the relevant symbols for each of the elements. It is a good starting point to plot your ‘ba gua’, these allows you to see how you’re going to balance the energies, determining which sections of your home relate to which parts of your life. Feng shui provides nine different areas of life; career, relationships, family and ancestors, wealth, health, supportive friends, travel, creativity, and aspirations. Before starting it is useful to make sure that your house is void of clutter, this confuses positive energies and leads to a chaotic life. Opening a window once a day in your house allows fresh chi to come in. As previously mentioned each element is associated with a bearing, a colour, and an aspect of your life. Metal represents clarity and precision, so by decorating the west and north west of your house white or grey you will bring out qualities such as clarity and efficiency. Wood is associated with browns and greens and south, southeast, these colours are used to bring out health and vitality in your home. Water represents the north, east, and southeast areas of your home; water is associated with abundance and the colours black and blue. Water can be used to direct positive energies through the house. Beige, and other earthy or sandy colours represent Earth; these should be used in the northwest and southeast areas of your home. Finally fire represents passion and high energy, reds, oranges, and yellows should be used in the southwest and northeast areas of your home. So if you’re looking for a new home west midlands then make sure that you can get the feng shui right in your new home.
