Signs It's Time to Give up "Job Security" For 2-1/2 years, I coordinated ghostwriting with both an on call position and a second part-time job doing upholstery work. The on call position provided "benefits." It also provided a sense of "job security." Gradually, that began to change. The business where I did upholstery closed its doors, so I began pursuing writing aggressively on Elance, oDesk and Craigslist. The ghostwriting business began to grow. With that growth came some tough decisions. Over the last year, I began to feel like the on call position was starting to threaten my ability to use ghostwriting as a second income. The employer could require me as little as 8 hours in a month or suddenly need me 40 hours a week. It made scheduling work for ghostwriting clients next to impossible. I wondered, Was I losing clients? It was a hard decision to reach, but I finally gave my employer four weeks notice. I was going to leave at the end of the year. Are you facing a similar decision? Are you wondering if it's time to take the leap? Then ask yourself the following questions. What are the signs that it could be time to let go of that W-2 job? Are you passionate about ghostwriting? Don't consider ghostwriting as a full-time career unless you are passionate about writing. Writing isn't glamorous work. It's hard work. It takes discipline to sit in front of the computer for eight to ten hours a day. While you don't have to work seven days a week (I don't), remember if you don't establish a routine and commit yourself to a regular schedule, you won't earn a living. You'll also lose clients. Have you built a strong portfolio? oDesk and Elance allow you to build a strong portfolio with examples of your work. Make sure your website also provides enough examples to give confidence in your skills. If you don't have this in place, you aren't ready to move into full-time ghostwriting. Are you receiving calls from potential clients in parts of the country where you have never advertised? This could be a sign your SEO efforts are beginning to pay off. It can also be proof that your work is beginning to secure referrals. Are you having to ask clients to wait for your availability? If you are staying so busy that you have to schedule clients two, three or even four weeks out, it could be a sign that you'll be able to make a living working full-time as a ghostwriter. Can you offer more than one service? If you provide a range of services, such as resumes, SEO article writing, SEO website content development, sales pages, eBooks, coaching, editing, etc., it will be easier to remain at work constantly. The most important thing to remember is this. You must do a top-quality job on every writing service you provide. If you don't, you won't maintain the reputation you need. oDesk, Elance and V-Worker are all places you want to be able to turn to when work slows down. Developing your marketing skills is essential before you move into full-time writing. Not only do you need marketing skills to promote yourself; you need marketing skills to enhance your writing. You will be able to earn more if your writing accomplishes your client's goals - click through and conversion to sales. thesis
