We may not realise it, but the design, decor and layout of our home and office have a great impact on our quality of life. If our house or workplace is in harmony with nature, it mitigates our day-to-day problems and fills our life with abundance. Vaastu is an ancient architectural science that balances the five elements in the environment bringing in productivity and success. Vaastu, often referred to as ‘vaastu shastra’, is an ancient ‘dwelling science’ that has been in existence in India for over 4,000 years. It integrates the pervading cosmic energy to ensure that a structure, built in accordance with the principles of vaastu, is in harmony with its immediate surroundings and the universe as a whole. The human body is deeply aligned to the universe. Every part of a house or office is akin to the human body and its limbs. Hindu mythology speaks of different limbs representing different energy levels. Similarly, different areas of a house/commercial complex are imbued with different kinds of energy because of its magnetic and cosmic energy fields. The grid of the energy points, when mapped on a piece of property, forms what is known as ‘vaastu mandala’. This is used as a reference point to build and orient rooms in a property and the energy in each sector of the grid determines the activity in that room. Living on this earth, we are surrounded by an ocean of electromagnetic and stellar influences. Even a subtle change in the ‘atmosphere’ of the place has the potential of affecting our thoughts and actions because every particle of energy is linked to the other in the atmosphere. The thalamus in the human brain is the relay centre for all sensory and motor perceptions. Neurological studies have found that the firing patterns of neurons in the thalamus function differently depending on which direction a person is facing. In other words, our mind is the interactive result of the affect of the magnetic field on our brain cells. By aligning ourselves with the appropriate magnetic direction, we can think and act more in tune with nature. The movement of the sun produces different qualities of energy on its path from east to west and can influence our daily life. In addition to this, the five elements associated with the compass direction have an influence on all our activities. According to vaastu tradition, the north and north-east area of your home or office is linked to the element water which is good for the success of your venture. It is said that managerial offices and research and development projects do well in this location. If the vaastu of a place is right, the venture will flourish and there will be ample cash flow. But if there is a toilet in this area or there is clutter, heating or lighting systems, or blockage, growth will be slow and could be quite negative. The southwest area of your office is associated with the earth element and relates to financial support, savings and authority and is a preferred sector for decision makers. A toilet in this area is considered a no no. It could deplete your savings and authority and adversely affect your relationships. The central area of a home or office is associated with the space element, often referred to as “bramhasthana” in vaastu. More opening in the centre, with space for air circulation and a feel of openness ushers in new business and career opportunities. Kitchen, toilet and clutter in the centre choke energy flow. It is for this reason that traditional homes generally had an open courtyard in the middle of the building. Creating the right balance and ensuring proper flow of energy is the main focus of vaastu shastra. It’s a wonderful tool to keep us in sync with mother earth.
