It can also be an enjoyable activity in which the whole family can participate. Here are some tips to help make the decorating experience easy and fun for everyone: 1. Create a plan Kids have very specific ideas about what they like and about how they want their rooms to look. To get all of that information, try a family planning session. Give adults and children some blank paper and set out coloured markers, crayons or other fun drawing tools. Let the kids draw their dream room. Encourage them to include the furniture, wall coverings, posters and other design elements they want to see in their dream room. Adults can use their creativity to work on colour-matching elements and flooring decisions. Make sure to explain to the kids any items that aren't feasible in their design and offer replacement suggestions. Each person's input can be reviewed as a family and used to build the perfect room. 2. Shop together Once all of the ideas have been planned on paper, it's time to go shopping! Be sure to define a specific budget ahead of time, and explain to the kids how much is available for each element in their design. Once you're on the shopping trip, take time to shop in the appropriate stores for each item. While one-stop shopping locations are convenient, they rarely have the best prices on specific items. Also, specialty store employees often have expertise in their area that you can use to help refine your design ideas or find bargains. If you can sew, be sure to make as many items as possible such as beddings and pillows. Buying fabric and materials is much more cost effective than buying premade items. 3. Decorate Let the kids participate in putting together their own room. There are, of course, certain things that only an adult should do such as putting together the kids bedroom suites, or laying down the flooring. Other things like hanging pictures and other simple tasks can be left to the children to make them feel that they are participating in decorating their dream room. Allowing the kids to participate in each part of the process creates a sense of ownership and responsibility. Not only will this make the design a family project, but it will encourage them to keep it clean in the future. While everyone wants their space to be beautiful, taking the time to learn about what your kids want and designing a room to please the whole family is an exercise well worth the time and effort. With good planning everyone can participate in bringing their kids' dream bedroom to life.
