The re-exam of the applied mathematics paper for first-year engineering students was conducted smoothly on Thursday morning after so much glitch. Unlike the delays usually experienced at all Mumbai University (MU) examinations, the paper started on schedule. This could be attributed to the new system of sending question papers via email just 15 minutes before the scheduled time of the exam. Barring some faded prints of question papers at some exam centers, no major issue was reported. A total of 27,664 second semester students of the first-year engineering course appeared for the paper across 61 centers. While students complained about having to appear for the re-exam, opinions varied on the level of difficulty of the paper. The question paper for the applied mathematics exam was leaked a night before its scheduled date of May 18, via emails and messages. MU initially denied the leak. Police complaints were lodged with the cybercrime cell for two different papers — physics and BEE (Basics of Electricals and Electronics) which were reportedly uploaded on a social networking website. During the investigation however, the police confirmed that even the applied mathematics paper was leaked. The re-exam for physics and BEE will be held on June 16 and 18, respectively. Nearly four weeks after the University of Mumbai declared their results, the nearly 25,000 B.Sc students in the city are yet to get their mark sheets. Of the 2,723 students majoring in geology, physics, mathematics and statistics, only 1,021 cleared the exams whose results were out on May 20. Results of life sciences, biotechnology, and microbiology majors were announced on May 24. However, both set of students are now worried about M.Sc admissions being delayed, despite the timely.
