You might not ever be planning on opting for life insurance. You would also be willing to take the risk of not availing even earthquake insurance. But no one ever takes any risk with health insurance(in Denmark it's called Priser på sundhedsforsikring). If you end up in hospital, this can drain your finances in a great way. It a very true factor that health insurance can be a money draining factor as well. Almost all health insurances are expensive. But if you take the time to conduct a little research, you can definitely find the one that suits your budget. Employer’s insurance is the best If your employer provides you with a health insurance, this would be the cheapest one that you can attain. You should only be looking for your own insurance if you do not have that sort of privilege from your company and also if you are self employed. If your employer has provided you with health insurance and you have left the company, there are options to extend your coverage. You can extend your coverage for upto 18 months, but you will have to pay the premium yourself. You can investigate your coverage under COBRA, which is Consolidated Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1985. Finding a health insurance broker You can also find a health insurance broker for comparing plans and the different costs that you could be incurring. There is a National Association of Health Underwriters who can help you get the best coverage and even the plan that can suit you financially. If you opt for a fee for service plan, this could be a great benefit because you can have the control over which doctor you want to see and also find out whether you want to see a specialist. The biggest drawback that this service has is that the premiums would be generally high. If you wish to see a particular doctor and that doctor charges you more money, then this could end up extra apart from the insurance that you acclaim. The different managed care plans You can also sign up for a managed care plan, and it would be up to your insurance provider to determine which doctors you should see. The first kind of managed care would be the Preferred provider organizations. In this kind of health insurance your insurance provider would have the list of doctors which you choose from. If you choose the doctor who is within the insurer’s network, then you can get a very cheap premium rate. In the second kind of managed care plan, which is the Point-of-service, you would have a primary care physician who takes the final decision about which specialist you can or cannot see. In the third managed care system which is the Health maintenance organizations, they are very restrictive, but the least expensive. They are adamant that you see a doctor within their network. Looking upto prescription drug coverage You can also compare the different health insurance plans based on the prescription drug coverage which they offer. Some insurance companies do offer the list of prescription medicines which they cover under their insurance scheme.
