We already had expanded basic cable service, so the self-install was easy. Took about 10 minutes to set this up after a call to the cable company - it is plug-and-play. Modem is well built and solid. Does not run "hot" as indicated in another review (at least mine doesn't). After being on for hours the top is warm, but not overly so. My little DSL modem got just as warm, or warmer, than this one. Nice little rubber feet. I did not want the model with the built in wireless router. I would rather have a separate router for upgrades, flexibility, and the fact that if one or the other craps out I don't have to toss the whole unit. It is more expensive this way I guess, and takes up slightly more room, but that's OK. Speeds are excellent. I am paying for 15 Mbps service but routinely get 20-30 Mbps depending on time of day. Upload speed has been consistently around 3 Mbps. I've read that DOCSIS 3.0 allows for better speed control by the cable company, but I'm happy with this speed to be sure. I'm running this through multiple splitters - maybe three. We live in an old 1927 house, so the wiring is not the best in the world. I've had one dropped connection (a T3 or T4 timeout I believe the modem log said). I re-seated the cable connection at the back and the modem re-booted fine. The stability seems fine so far. The only thing I don't like is that the bottom indicator (for device connection) flashes instead of being constant. Amber for regular ethernet speed or blue for gigabit - my router is regular speed so I get amber. It's not a deal breaker but why have a constantly flashing light? Somewhat annoying. I would prefer it be a steady light, and flashing only if something is wrong. I've researched this and it seems to be the way this modem is configured, for some reason. It would be nice if a firmware update could address this but I'm not holding my breath. It looks nice IMO. No funky weird lines or angles, just a nice little black box with cool lights. It's well ventilated too. I would buy another Surfboard SB6121 if needed. I tried the Cisco docsis 3.0 3010 previously, but comcast could not provision the upload properly on the extreme 50 tier.
