For the new wing of the American museum Renzo Piano chose shades designed by RESSTENDE, the leading Italian roller blind manufacturer. Renzo Piano designed the extension to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. The new wing, that encompasses areas for concerts, exhibitions and lecture rooms, is fitted with continuous facade outdoor blinds and interior blinds designed by Resstende, a leading Italian roller blind manufacturer. The Boston system for outdoor applications, has a functional, intrinsic and exclusive design, and was created especially for this project. The Boston system is extremely flexible and versatile, it may be easily adapted to a wide range of building facades. This sunshade is composed of: Ø 8mm AISI 316 stainless steel guide rods with springs to compensate thermal dilation; custom designed AISI 316 stainless steel mounting brackets and a Ø116mm round extruded aluminum headbox CT110. The frame is powder coated RAL 9006. Angelo Furia, Resstende chief designer, explains that the flexibility of the Boston system has lead to the development of many types of blind using the same base structure and adds: “in the tilted version the standard system has been enhanced by technical elements such as the innovative Traction kit: a forced traction system that provides efficient tension of the fabric by means of a gas piston and ensures greater stability of the blind even under strong wind conditions. In the tilted hinged version of the Boston system, with a mechanism that allows the blinds to open at an angle, articulated channels allow the windows to be opened outwards. The smooth operation of the system is guaranteed by an especially modified traction system.” The shading fabric used comes from the Resstende Cool Collection (Sunscreen Satiné 5500 - code 30618), a fire retardant fabric with optimum light and weather resistance. For the interior of the museum a number of different shade systems have been installed including the Wintermeeting, another high quality and technical product.
