It has been a long time since Pixar released a film that has a character as it centre who is a strong female. Fortunately they've released a new production which is entitled Brave, but it doesn't do justice to the central female character. The artistic and technical animation in this film is beautiful and it has been set in Scotland. This is the thirteenth feature film that has been created by the studio and the work on the scenery including rolling hills and green forests is quite remarkable. The story follows Princess Merida, the heroine of the piece. She is a free-spirited and feisty character with long red curls that are finely detailed. This character is voiced by Kelly MacDonald. The movie starts by showing this character riding through the forest on horseback and taking out targets with a bow and arrow. She is clearly an expert archer and it seems that no target is too much of a challenge for her. The character clearly has no qualms about disobeying the rules and it is almost a shame that the movie feels safe overall when there is such an unruly lead character. In fact, the overall feel of the movie is that it is rather old-fashioned, and not in a particularly good way. The script has been written by Brenda Chapman and Mark Andrews, who have also been responsible for co-directing the movie. The characters will feel familiar to fans of Disney movies as the idea of a princess in the lead role is hardly new. The start of the movie is rather thrilling and exciting but it just takes a short while for the movie to become rather silly. This really gives those in the theatre the feeling that this movie has not been targeted as a family affair, but rather as a movie that is just there to entertain children. Generally Pixar's movies in the past have been quite emotionally moving which satisfies an entire family, however this one seems to leave that out. The more adult members of the audience will also find it difficult to emotionally relate to the characters. There isn't a great deal of development done to them and they lack a certain depth. This movie is certainly pleasant to watch but compared to some of Pixar's movies in the past it is largely a disappointment. The cast of this production is excellent however and Emma Thompson and Billy Connelly make welcome appearances. These two voice actors play the role of the king and queen, the parents of our heroine, and they are determined to make sure that she doesn't get into any mischief. The queen is fairly insistent that her daughter prepares to get married despite the fact that the girl has no desire to. There is an entertaining scene when she competitively arches against her potential suitors and humiliates them all. This movie is entertaining but that is really all it offers, the movie feels that if it had been shaken up but that it would have been a great deal better. Watch Full Movie Online for Free
