Athletes from varsity and junior varsity spring sports at The John Cooper School were recently recognized for their outstanding contributions. Athletes in baseball, softball, tennis, golf and track and field were honored with Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player and Dragon Awards for determination in each sport. The season concluded with the Southwest Preparatory Conference Championships in each sport. The Dragons baseball team won its first-ever SPC Division II title and finished the season with a record-setting 25 wins as well as a school-record for fewest losses in a season (10). The team also set school season records in home runs (13), extra base hits (96), hits (307) and pitching strikeouts (237). Individually, Chris Demetradies set a school single-season record with 47 hits. He was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. He also earned All-South Zone SPC honors as well. Stephen Chernekoff set a school single-season record with five home runs. He was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year. He was also All-SPC Casey Atkins tied the school single-season pitching record with seven wins. He was All-South Zone SPC Honorable Mention. T.J. Seefeldt took the Dragon Award and was also SPC All-South Zone as well as All-SPC Honorable Mention. In addition, John McCormick earned All-SPC honors while Ross Patterson (All-SPC Honorable Mention) and Reid Tikkanen (SPC All-South Zone Honorable Mention) were also recognized. “I was very proud of our senior leaders this year,” said coach Brett Landrum. “We had a good mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen. The talent really gelled.” Junior varsity baseball awards went to Kevin Camstra (MVP), Matthew Schrader (Offensive Player of the Year), and Noel Strickling (Dragon Award). Lady Dragons softball awards went to Alyssa Early (Most Valuable Defensive Player), Maggie Hohlfeld (Most Valuable Offensive Player) and Lydia Lemoine (Dragon Award). Early also earned SPC All-South Zone recognition. In addition, Emily Rigby (All-SPC), Stephanie Danner (SPC All-South Zone and All-SPC Honorable Mention), Bridget Strickland (All-SPC Honorable Mention), and Meredith Shedden (SPC All-South Zone Honorable Mention) also earned postseason honors. Both girls’ and boys’ tennis teams recorded best seasons ever, advancing to the SPC Championship Division I tournament. The Lady Dragons advanced all the way to the finals. Aurora Kareh (MVP), Madeline Leary (MIP) and Kaitlyn Coleman (Dragon Award) earned top honors. Kareh and Coleman were also All-SPC nominees while Morgan Taylor and Amanda Evans (SPC All-South Zone), and Calah Pachman and Sarah Suki (SPC All-South Zone Honorable Mention) also garnered postseason honors. “This team has worked long and hard this season,” said coach Jill Del Rio. “You couldn’t have a more talented and committed group of girls.” Boys’ tennis awards went to Octavio Canibe (MVP), Sunil Bellur (MIP) and Sam Shuster (Dragon Award). Canibe also earned All-SPC honors while Shuster was SPC All-South Zone Honorable Mention. Also receiving postseason honors were Jordan Flink (All-SPC), Reva Reddy (SPC All-South Zone), Akal Sethi (Rotary Club of Lake Conroe All Montgomery County Scholar Athlete), and Graham Friday (SPC All-South Zone Honorable Mention). Junior varsity girls’ tennis awards went to Iyza Baig (MVP), Gisele Moran (MIP), and Colby Konz (Dragon Award). The John Cooper School girls’ golf team set school records by shooting rounds of 268 at The John Cooper Invitational, and 270 at the Episcopal High School Invitational. The Lady Dragons also won five invitational tournaments and took third place in SPC Championship play. Several individuals had multiple top-10 finishes throughout the season including All-SPC Bri Trial (6) and Claire Naisby (5), along with Allex Murphy (3), Leslie Gremp (2), Carly Humes (2), All-SPC Matt Barth (6), and Ryan Prasad (4). Naisby (MVP), Carly Humes (MIP) and both Murphy and Gremp (Dragon Awards) took the school’s top honors. Prasad (MVP), Barth (MIP) and Marcus Letwin (Dragon Award) earned the boys’ top honors. Track athletes also set school records this season. All-SPC Matt Hodges set the school record in the 400 with a time of 51.6 seconds and All-SPC Tim Cousins set the school mark in the 3,200 at 9:48.08. Hodges earned Most Valuable Athlete-Sprints while Cousins captured the Most Valuable Athlete-Distance awards. Jasmandeep Toor (MIP) and Luis Quintero (Dragon Award) were also honored. All-SPC Lauren Sternick (Most Valuable Athlete-Distance), Stephanie Camstra (Most Valuable Athlete-Sprints), Christianne Johnson (MIP), and Emily Dunlap (Dragon Award) earned the school’s top honors. “It’s been a real competitive season,” said Mike Cooper, athletics director. “The kids have all worked hard and they have a great group of coaches to help them.
