NGOs on a Mission to Make India Literate

Non-Profit Organizations
India is often called as the next superpower of the world. This status has been given seeing the GDP growth, growing metros and globalisation. However if we look beyond the dazzling glamour of cities and focus toward the core of the country we will see that we are still far away from the road of development. There are still lot of problems plaguing the country. Ill practices like female infanticide, dowry, child abuse, child labour and caste disparity is still prevailing in India. These are like the malediction to the growth of the nation.

Corruption has become a very part of our life. Every day the front page of the newspaper flaunts a new millions dollar scam. In 2012, about 65 years from independence we are still tagged with the ‘developing’ status despite blessed with tonnes of natural resources.

If we look towards the vital statistics concerning the development of India we will see that India is far behind the countries with same years of independence. If we look at the literacy rate we are still struggling with the 74% literacy. The 75% mark may seem to be good milestone for India but if gaze toward the rural India we would find that 90% of the people are still illiterate and are using thumbprints to sign legal documents.

If we look toward the health of the people of India it is very depressing to know that people are still dying because of cholera and malaria even after 60 years of independence. Children and women are malnourished in almost every part of the country. The ever growing population has tremendously slowed down the pace of the nation. The rural India is still living with the notion of ‘more children, more working hands’.

However a lot of NGOs or nongovernmental organisation has come up to rescue the situation. NGOs are working in sync with the government as well as independently to take India towards the right track. They are working with the government to help the rural development initiatives to seep down the grass root level of the rural areas. NGO India has been working to eradicate the bugs of illiteracy by setting up of rural schools.

Lately a lot of NGO are working for women empowerment by helping them to retrieve loans from the banks and set up self-help groups (SHGs). This has revived the old cottage industry. Now women in the rural areas are more empowered and are self dependent. This has reduced a lot of atrocities on women. It has also changed the orthodox thinking of the people that women are weaker and dependent species of the society.

The NGOs are however non-profit organisation that mainly function from the government and private donation India. Many people and corporate have actively supported the initiatives of the NGOs by helping them with financial and other resources. NGOs are a ray of hope for the government to infringe the tribal population of India and make them a part of the growing economy.

Ftsindia: We are NGO in India, recognized as the Friends of Tribal Society (FTS). We are setting up of rural schools. This is our humble request to you please Donate us to help the tribal society, rural development and other neglected in rural India.
