When looking at technological advancements over the last 100 hundred years, it is astounding to see how far we have come. The degree of change is absolutely astounding and it is testament to the ingenuity and industriousness of the human race. In comparison to the last 1000 years of human history, the pace of technological advancements in the last century is downright miraculous and simply awe-inspiring. Technological advancement now takes place at a speed so astounding that you can nigh on blink and miss it. Take a look at the computing industry, where machines which were built 10 years ago are now considered to be relics of a bygone age, no longer of any use to anyone. You only have to take a look at the computing industry to really get a feel for the pace of technological advancement which has certainly reached a peak in the last two decades. The computer games industry offers a prime example of how quickly technology advances. Twenty years ago people were marvelling at the brilliance of such games as Pac-Man and Tetris; games which were essentially graphically made up of an extremely limited amount of pixels. Twenty years on and games now depict whole worlds and all their minutiae in stunning detail, all showcasing complex engines which control everything from the physics to the visuals of huge game worlds. This once niche industry has ballooned into a multi-billion pound behemoth and the technological progress shows no signs of abating with yet better graphics and better physics touted and exhibited with each new release. It is not only the games industry which has felt the progress of technology but all industries and they have each been affected in different ways by the meteoric rise of personal computing in the 1980s. One need only look at such industries as the music industry, which is now considering the option of ceasing to produce CDs and starting to produce and release all of its content digitally for people to download without the need to buy hard copies. Computers then have changed the world beyond all recognition and it has enabled humans to carry out ever more advanced and astounding feats, such as creating a super-computer which contains a simulation of an entire galaxy. Twenty years ago such a feat would have been deemed impossible and unthinkable in our lifetimes. Technology is moving at a dizzyingly fast pace and it will only continue to speed up as more and more people begin to explore just what we can actually achieve with computers.
