The great game of cricket has been around for centuries and has its origins in England. During empire phase of British history, the English took it all over the world and it gained particular footholds in Caribbean Islands and India, where today it is especially revered with the best players holding almost god-like status to their legions of fans and no-one more so than the mighty Sachin Tendulkar who can do know wrong in the eyes of India’s cricket fanatics. Cricket is a ball and bat sport which is played only during summer months and takes place in a field with a strip of hardened dirt which acts as the heart of play. The teams are divided into the batting team and the fielding team and each have a turn to score as many runs as possible in the allotted innings. The fielding team bowls the ball at the batter and the batter must hit the ball as far ways as possible enabling him to run up and down the centre patch and score runs. The batting team aims to score as many runs while avoiding being caught out. At each end of the hardened strip is a set of stumps called wickets which have a set of peg like things on top. In order to get a batter out the bowler must either hit these wickets or force the batter to make a mistake which results in one of the fielders catching the ball before it hits the ground. Complicated, right? And that’s just the abridged version. With a little patience however you will find yourself falling in love with this most gratifying of sports. Batters where heavy padding over the front of their knees, shins and feet and they also where helmets and face guards as the best bowlers can bowl the ball at speeds in excess of 100mph and keep in mind that a cricket ball is heavy and as hard as rock. Not one for the faint hearted you might be tempted to say. While cricket can seem to be a relaxed game in certain instances it can also be one of the most exciting games you will ever watch as the teams vie to outfox each other and finish the day with the highest number of runs not out. There are many types of cricket and it can be quite confusing to separate them as some games can last for days! Be sure that once you get into cricket it certain that you will be caught heading down to the park on a warm, sunny afternoon with ball, bat and wickets in hand ready to take on all comers.
