Thirty-seven-year-old Crystal Curtis of Winston-Salem is facing criminal charges in conjunction with the vehicular death of a 76-year-old man, Royal Lancaster. Troopers charged Warren after consulting with a lawyer from the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office. The trooper who arrested Curtis said that she was subsequently released on a promise in writing to appear for future court dates. It was not clear if Curtis had yet retained a Winston-Salem criminal lawyer with regard to the accident that took the life of Lancaster, also of Winston-Salem. Lancaster was riding his motorcycle on Hickory Tree Road when Curtis turned in front of his motorcycle, causing the two vehicles to collide. The force of the impact ejected Lancaster from his motorcycle. First responders to the scene transported Lancaster via emergency vehicle to Winston-Salem’s Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where he later died as a result of the accident. Curtis, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries was treated at Forsyth Medical Center, also in Winston-Salem, and then released. Though Curtis was originally charged with a yield violation, and a spokesperson with the Highway Patrol indicated that neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the accident, the D.A.’s office for Davidson County has chosen to increase the charge to a criminal misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. Curtis probably never expected that she would need the services of a criminal lawyer in the Winston-Salem area, but she has the right to one to assist her in defending herself against the criminal charge.
