Recycling Electronics: How Does It Happen?

Electronics
Through the years, people unintentionally build up their used electronics, computers, or appliances pile in the garage or storage room. Fortunately, there is good awareness now about recycling these electronic items. Some computer and electronics recyclers in VA and computer recyclers in Baltimore, MD have increased the number of their customers year after year. Computer wholesale store in MD, Laptop wholesale stores in MD and even Iphone repair stores in DC all have recycling programs, rebates, and offers to their customers.

But how does it really happen? How does the recycling process take place? What happens to make sure that these products do not end up at the landfill?

Not all metal products are created equal. While some products, such as aluminum cans, do not require sorting or separation, electronic waste is not composed of just one material. Electronic devices need to be broken down, separated to their little bits and pieces, so recycling e-waste is a more complex process.

For background, we need to remember that it is important to recycle electronics because electronics contain heavy metals, and Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) found in computer monitors and televisions that may contain up to 8 lbs of hazardous lead. So it all starts in the assembly line of a recycling plant.

From the collected used electronics, workers take out the recyclable plastic or wooden case, metal chassis, yoke, PC board, wire and metal strap from the CRT. These materials are all sorted for individual commodity sales. In general, almost 99 percent of the materials removed from electronics are reused is different things or sold.

After the parts have been separated, the CRTs are then loaded onto a conveyor system that leads into a CRT crusher. Each recycling plant may have their own customized crusher. On average, a crusher can process 100-150 CRTs per hour, or over 15 tons per day.

Once the CRTs enter the crusher, they drop into a rotating hammer mill. In here, the hammers hit the glass, causing the CRT to implode into pieces of glass and metal. Then a magnet pulls metal from the mix, and a screen is used to sift the glass to produce the desired size. Metals and crushed glass are separately discharged from the bottom of the system into commodity containers for shipment, sale, and reuse. As for the lead-contaminated glass, these are taken to a smelter. The smelter uses the glass as a fluxing agent in the processing of raw lead ore. The lead from the glass becomes part of their end product, which is then sold to be used in the manufacture of products such as new CRTs, x-ray shielding, bullets and batteries.

There you have it. A sneak peak to the nitty-gritty details that happen during recycling of electronics. The profits than come from recycling these used electronics vary; some are less valuable than others. From an environmental standpoint, the fact that these items are reused is far more important than any monetary benefits of recovering these valuable materials.
