In recent years advancements in technology in all walks of life have been dramatic and relentless. Nowadays it is not uncommon for you to buy an electrical product or household gadget and see it become obsolete within a matter of months. Technology is developing so fast that some companies are even having to release products that they know are not top of the range just so that they can make a profit on their new developments. In the space of thirty years we have moved from listening to music on twelve inch vinyl records, to using cassette players and having the ability to record on the go, and then through CDs and even mini-discs before we have settled on what is common place today, the MP3. Now, any other way of listening to and buying music is seen as ridiculous, archaic. The chances are MP3 technology has been around a lot longer than we have known, but products were developed in the meantime to ensure high enough profits. These technological advancements are not only evident in the music industry, but are clearly overwhelmingly apparent in all walks of life. Computers and laptops have come on in leaps and bounds, televisions have gone from black and white with three channels to 50 inch 3D HD picture that really is a lifetime away from its predecessors. One of the most dramatic advancements has got to be in the mobile telephone industry. In the 1990s we were lucky enough to witness the phones as big as your head, with a huge battery pack that you must carry with you at all times. There was no text messaging, just simply the ability to call other telephones from outside the house. Fast forward twenty years and we really do have something that looks like it has come out of a science fiction film. Tiny phones with big HD screens, connected to the internet with the same video gaming capabilities that used to be available on a Playstation 2. It really is incredible how some things have changed, however on the other hand it seems that some things have really become set in their ways. It is fair to say that if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, although this seems to have been ignored in various different product ranges. What seems to have been left in the dark somewhat is the technology in the kitchen. Ovens, fridges, dishwashers and even the little things like blenders and kettles have all been the same for many years now; just think what they could become in the future. It is exciting to think how goods such as American fridges or a combination microwave might look in the kitchens of the future.
