Britain was built on tea. Everybody knows that without tea nothing would ever get done in this country. Tea breaks are common place in most offices around the country. If it isn’t tea that people need in order to function, it is a cup of coffee, either way the majority of us will not start the day without switching the kettle on. It may seem like a novelty to get boiling water in such a short space of time, most people would consider using a pan on a hob as not too much bother. However, in reality without the invention of the kettle, our nation’s obsession with, and dependence upon, tea and coffee would never have got to this level. A good indication as to the importance of the kettle is to look back at its illustrious history. 1878 is widely considered as the year that the first working electrical light bulb was demonstrated. It is no surprise that the light bulb was the first use of electricity as it really is rather helpful to be able to see when it gets dark. For the next twenty years, however, the main priority for the focus of the inventors at the forefront of the invention of electricity appears to be the invention of the kettle. Just eight years after the first light bulb was lit the first attempt at the electric kettle was made and by 1900 just twenty-two years later the kettle was very similar to the model we know and love today. It is incredible to think that as soon as the British population was in the light, inventors' immediate thoughts were to have a cup of tea! However, they were no longer satisfied with their archaic method for boiling water and so set about inventing what nearly every house in the UK has today. Nowadays it is commonplace to have a cup of tea before work, during work and as a celebration after work. We are known around the world as a nation of tea drinkers and it is all down to the founders of electricity over one hundred years ago. Nowadays it is not just tea and coffee that can be made using a kettle, but with new products come on to the market every day. We can now cook our dinner using just a kettle. Many people may think that the oven is the most vital piece of equipment in the kitchen, but in reality the kettle will always be king of the appliances.
