New Delhi, May 4: Telemarketing and e-commerce firms are banking on missed calls as a promotional tool to counter efforts by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) to ban unsolicited marketing messages. During the Cricket World Cup, anyone who wanted to know the score had to give a missed call to a specified number to get an SMS with the score.http://www.zipdial.com/corp/ “On the very first day of the World Cup cricket match, we received 4 million dials on a single day,” said Valerie Rozycki, chief executive officer of ZipDial — a Bangalore-based tech start-up — which enables promotional activities through its missed-call platform. The technology allows customers to call a specified ZipDial number. The call gets disconnected after two rings and the customer gets a call back from the marketing firm giving information on products and services. “The method overrides the push factor in promotional marketing and puts the onus on the customers. It is also in line with Trai’s proposal on a do-call list,” said Beena George, brand leader with McCann Worldgroup, the leading global marketing communications firm. According to Trai’s proposals on commercial calls, customers can choose to get marketing messages from any of the seven categories — banking/credit cards, real estate, education, health, consumer goods/auto, entertainment and tourism. http://www.zipdial.com/corp/ “India stands out in text message use compared with other countries and many people take positive action about the advertisement received.
