Under new athletics director Phillip De La Rosa’s experience and guidance, Alvin Living Stones is taking the first steps back into the land of TAPPS competition. Living Stones decided to take a year off from its TAPPS affiliation last year, but now, the private school is once again active in league-sanctioned volleyball, girls and boys basketball, golf, tennis, track, baseball and softball, and for the first time ever, six-man football. Last week, coach Stephanie Pitkin’s volleyball team captured the Conroe Covenant Tournament championship, and De La Rosa’s six-man gridders played their first-ever scrimmage at Pasadena First Baptist. “Coach Pitkin and the volleyball team are doing a great job, and with (junior) Tiffani Wagner and (senior) Kendra Shawrieh leading the way, they brought home the first-place trophy,” De La Rosa said. “It’s just part of the excitement we’re feeling about our teams.” The Lions were as bit timid during the early part of the football scrimmage at First Baptist, but by the end, the Living Stones players were hitting hard and ready “You always want to leave wanting more, and that’s what we did,” De La Rosa said. “That scrimmage was so important because it kind of turned on the lights for a lot of our players. When we open the season next week at Dickinson Pine Drive (Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.), we’re going to be ready. The players are really looking forward to the first game.” Junior running back Brent Lopez and sophomore quarterback Joshua Pancamo threw two touchdown passes apiece at First Baptist, with juniors Ever Davila and David Salazar snagging two each. Seniors Chad Barfield and John Reynaud were defensive leaders who also contributed offensively. “It was like we were asleep at the start, but they woke up the Lions, and you could see our players picking up the concept as it went on,” De La Rosa said. “You could see the team progress from the first play to the last, they came on strong at the end, and were ready to keep playing.” Living Stones welcomes Texas Christian in a Sept. 14 home opener at 4:30 p.m. with the game also serving as a TAPPS Division II, District 5 opener. The Lions’ seven-team football district also includes Bellville Faith, Brenham Christian, Conroe Lifestyles, Houston Oaks Adventist and West Columbia Christian. In TAPPS District 8-A volleyball, Living Stones competes with Baytown San Jacinto, Dickinson Living Faith, Houston Family Christian, Texas Christian, Oaks Adventist, Houston Banff, Orange Community Christ, Port Arthur Ridgewood and West Columbia Christian. In Division II fall soccer, the Lions District 4 lineup features Conroe Covenant, Conroe Lifestyles, Chinquapin, Houston Sweetwater, Houston Heritage, Orange Community and Spring Woodlands. Living Stones soccer opens at Conroe Lifestyles Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. and hosts Spring Woodlands Sept. 7 at 5 p.m. in its home opener under coach Brad Allbright. Gordon McKee and James Pitkin, Stephanie’s husband, assist De La Rosa in football and other sports. “Everything is off to a positive start and we’re happy and excited to be competing against so many outstanding schools in all our districts,” said De la Rosa, who has 25 years of coaching experience, including 11 at Pasadena Faith. “Our student-athletes are dedicated and working very hard.” ping K15 Ping G20 scotty cameron odyssey white ice
