In order for you to understand Romany fortuneteller readings you need to understand that Romany is a term used to describe the “Gypsy” or nomadic people. There are some people that say the reason that these nomads were called gypsies was because people thought them to all be Egyptians, and they called them “Gyptians” for short. This word eventually evolved into the term “Gypsy”. The Roma people are the ones that brought the Romany fortuneteller readings to this country, and for most of them the skills they had at performing these acts were taught to them by their mothers, and their mothers before that. Palm reading required little to no tools so this was a good place for the young gypsy to start their education. The Gypsies were depicted as mysterious and elusive. They were said to have powers of perception that other people did not have. It was believed that they were all born clairvoyant and capable of conversing with spirits from other realms. The Romany fortuneteller readings of that time generally included a crystal ball that the psychic was to gaze into so they could be shown the secrets of life. Crystal balls are not really used anymore, as they were mostly a parlor trick and not actually connected to any extra sensory perceptions. Today Romany fortuneteller readings are mainly done with tarot style cards. The people that do these activities are generally born with the gift, rather than being instructed by their mothers and grandmothers in the art. These are more realistic readings that the shows that were put on in so many circus tents, and at so many country fairs. When reading tarot style cards the type of reading that is done, and the number of cards that the medium uses, are strictly up to them. A common type of reading is one that is done using only three cards. The three cards are turned up to represent the past life, the present life, and the future life of the individual being read. There are several variations of this though. You may have a psychic that prefers to turn up four or even five cards to reveal more detail about your life than what the past, present, and future style can show.
