Women have always had to ask for permission to play with the boys. At a time when few women had ever heard of the game, she regularly played on the course at St. Andrews, the world’s oldest golf course. Following her lead, the game of golf became popular with fashionable women, until the queen lost her head that is. For more than a century and a half, girls did not play golf in large numbers. In fact, most of the courses denied them entry. It was not until 1811 that the first tournament for women was held in Musselburgh, Scotland. The very first women’s golf organization was formed in St. Andrews in 1867. The ladies Club became a Mecca for women golfers the world over. Meanwhile, more and more clubs started admitting women golfers. The first women’s tournament was hosted by the Morris County Golf Club in 1894. A year later, the first U.S. women’s amateur championships were held. When it comes to ladies golf clothing, female players have always been held to a higher standard than the guys. Yes, there is an unwritten dress code, even for male golfers. But they have more options than the girls. When the game really caught on with women after the Second World War, female players we expected to wear dresses. Nowadays, women have a wider range of options. What do they wear? In addition to dresses, female golfers can find skirts, pants, and skorts that can be worn on the course. Most players choose their golfing attire based on the season. Longer pants and outerwear are often needed when playing in the fall or in the early spring. But when the mercury rises, most female golfers put on Capri pants, shirts, or skorts. Where to find them? Although it is far more popular with women than it once was, golf is still considered a niche sport. In other words, most sporting goods stores do not stock large inventories of ladies golf clothing.
