As I continue my research on my first book project there have been a number of authors who have generously shared their insights and experiences with me. One such Author is Dr. Janice Stanger, Ph.D. - she's a Human Behavior and Biology expert from one of our nation's top health science schools: University of California, San Francisco. Her book, The Perfect Formula Diet is not just a great read - it's top notch in lots of other areas too. I've personally researched over 100 current books on Weight Loss, Fitness and Nutrition and The Perfect Formula Diet is a standout. This article highlights some of the information that Dr. Stanger so generously offered to share with me in my research. And before I begin, if you are considering a book - recognize the power of the cover; and be sure to check out The Perfect Formula Diet as it has one of the best covers I have ever seen. Dr. Stanger decided to self-publish The Perfect Formula Diet after hearing Dan Poynter speak in Los Angeles in the very early stages of researching her topic. Dan is the worldwide guru of self-publishing and a very persuasive man. She started her own company to publish the book which required obtaining a City of San Diego business license, fictitious business name, state resale number, and federal EIN. She did her own research on how to copyright the book - which as she indicated were major time investments but good lessons along the way. She uses her business for speaking engagements, article writing, teaching, coaching and more so she is glad to have it all set up. As Dr. Stanger points out: "The most challenging part of self-publishing is finding the right vendors to work with. I spent a lot of time researching this on the web and asking others in the book industry for referrals. I also went to self-publishing conferences." Here are some highlights of her discoveries: 1) Only work with book professionals. General designers may say they know books, but they don't. 2) She selected 1106 Design out of Scottsdale - which designed the book's interior and exterior, her company logo, business cards, letterhead, etc. They submitted the book files to my printer. She recommends them and all of the services cost about $4K over a couple of months. 3) For a printer, she selected Lightning Source. They are owned by Ingram which she sees as a huge advantage and they are professional and responsive. 4) For web designer, she chose Monkey C Media which she saw as very easy to work with and they did all of the Search Engine Optimization. 5) Her choice with a PR Firm was a self-confessed mistake as she felt that they were a giant waste of money and produced little to no tangible results. All in all, Dr. Stanger comments: "I am delighted I self-published. Of course I made some mistakes, but learned a lot from them. The process is challenging and creative, and gives me total control over the results. I like the autonomy." This article is not designed to highlight specific vendors but to show some of the insights and experiences of the book writing process and to show what this particular author felt were important decision making factors. She's a wonderful lady and we appreciate Dr. Stanger sharing her insights with us and allowing us to share them with you. essay guarantees
