Skyler Phillips of Churchill High School continued his impressive summer workout circuit during The Opening football camp, held July 5-8 at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton. The Opening is an invite-only football camp featuring 150 of the top high school recruits in the country. Phillips, a 6-foot-3, 338-pound offensive lineman in the Class of 2013, was a relative unknown until Nike's SPARQ combine at Tigard High School in mid June, where he posted a SPARQ score of 98.58, the best score of any lineman all year. Phillips' eye-opening performance earned him an invite to the Nike Football Training Camp, and to The Opening as one of the top uncommitted linemen in the country. Phillips picked up his first official college offer from Oregon State on July 4, but has also recently drawn interest from Washington State and Nevada. Prior to his stellar showing at the SPARQ combine, he had no scholarship offers from any schools. At The Opening, Phillips participated in full contact blocking drills and received coaching from current NFL offensive linemen Montrae Holland and Mike and Maurkice Pouncey, as well as former NFL star LeCharles Bentley. On Saturday afternoon, Phillips held his own lining up opposite of Caleb Brantley, a defensive lineman committed to the University of Florida, and one of ESPN's top 50 recruits for the Class of 2013. Phillips' participation at The Opening, along with his other impressive workouts this summer, will surely bring him more attention from college scouts heading into his senior season at Churchill.
