Gutted that trains are reaching faster speeds whilst you’re still stationary searching for decent internet access? Fear not, you can now happily update and keep in the loop with trains in the UK now offering internet access. Consulting firm Base Wire Communications System (BWCS) has estimated that there are approximately 2,000 train carriages in the UK that offer wireless internet access. This number is more than double what trains in Germany and Italy offer in terms of wireless internet access (911 and 995 carriages respectively), with all other European countries left behind on the platform. BWCS forecasts that the market for on-train wireless and cheap broadband services in Europe will rise to (€80 million) £64 million per year by 2021, up from €47 million a year in 2011. The firm also states that the business model for these services has become much more understandable. Cheap broadband was available in half of all Wi-Fi equipped carriages by mid-2012, while pre-paid admission was presented in just 17% of them. Just over 25% of trains operated internet access to a mixed-payment platform, with standard-class passengers charged for the period of time they remained connected, with premium passengers given free access. Graham Wilde, chief executive of BWCS, said: “competition is the major factor driving train operators to make this investment.” The news follows the announcement that South West Trains will offer on-board Wi-Fi across the rail-operator’s network over the next 12 months, according to Business Traveler.
